A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 13538 is a bright, warm orange-gold with a strong yellow bias and very high chroma. It reads clear and saturated rather than muted, with medium-light visual depth and a noticeable heat in the hue.
MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint made to match AMS-STD-595 13538 can be used on specification-driven parts such as equipment panels, brackets, housings, enclosures, carts, fixtures, switch covers, hardware, and fabricated components. The code itself defines a color reference, not coating chemistry, film build, or approval status, so it is mainly a visual target for maintenance, fabrication, restoration, or prototyping work.
Because this is a vivid color, coverage can be more demanding than with a neutral tone. Over dark, uneven, or contrasting substrates, additional coats may be needed for even color build, and sheen or texture can change how bright the orange-gold appears after application. For touch-up beside older coatings, the standard reference may still differ from a weathered or faded existing finish, so finish condition should be considered when the surrounding part matters.

The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 13538 is a color reference target, not a full coating specification. MyPerfectColor supplies paint matched to this government color reference, but the code itself does not choose the chemistry, gloss, surface prep, corrosion protection, or approval status for your project.
If your job requires a specific coating system or formal acceptance, verify those requirements separately before ordering.
Not always. Even if the order is a correct match to AMS-STD-595 13538, an older in-service coating can look different because of fade, weathering, sheen change, texture, or differences in the original coating.
For small repairs, the standard match may be acceptable. For visible or acceptance-critical repairs, it is often safer to match the existing part or use a sample panel instead of relying on the color code alone.
Reorder by the exact code, the same product type, and the same finish whenever possible. MyPerfectColor can make a custom-matched paint to AMS-STD-595 13538, but the final look can still shift with substrate, primer, film build, and application method.
If you are repeating a job, keep the same order details and application process to reduce variation between parts or batches.
Choose the product format based on the service environment and the substrate, not just the color code. AMS-STD-595 13538 tells you the color target, but it does not tell you whether you need spray paint, touch-up paint, epoxy, urethane, or another system.
Match the product to the actual use case, such as interior work, exterior exposure, abrasion, chemical exposure, or the material being coated.
Dry-to-touch, recoat time, and full cure are different stages, so plan the project around the specific MyPerfectColor product you order for AMS-STD-595 13538. The color code does not set those timings by itself.
Use the product instructions for handling and recoating, and allow for the finish and application method you are using.
