PMS 871 U is a Pantone PMS metallic color used as a visual reference standard for consistent color communication across materials and vendors. It conveys a solid, traditional metallic gold character that reads warm, dense, and authoritative rather than bright or flashy.
The color exhibits a low lightness, with an LRV of 21.06. It reads as warm with a classic gold undertone and moderate metallic saturation, appearing rich rather than highly brilliant.
PMS 871 U works well where a grounded metallic gold is needed without excessive brightness, particularly on signage, display components, and branded fixtures. Metallic colors can emphasize surface texture and application variation, so smooth substrates, proper priming, and consistent film build help achieve a uniform appearance.
Similar colors:
PMS 872 U: slightly lighter and more reflective, with a brighter gold appearance.
PMS 873 U: darker and more bronze-leaning, with reduced yellow warmth.
PMS 874 U: deeper and more subdued, with lower overall reflectivity.

No. Pantone PMS 871 U is a Pantone color standard, not a paint formula, and most paint manufacturers do not have a direct equivalent. Cross references are often approximations and can vary noticeably, especially for metallic Pantone colors like PMS 871 U.
If your project requires visual alignment to PMS 871 U, ordering a Pantone-matched paint and reviewing a physical sample is the most reliable approach. This avoids assumptions based on unofficial conversions that may not meet brand expectations.
Sheen affects how Pantone PMS 871 U is perceived, especially because it is metallic. Higher sheen finishes typically increase reflectivity and highlight the metallic character, while lower sheens can reduce sparkle and appear more subdued.
Choose sheen based on viewing distance, substrate texture, and how the surface will be lit. If brand approval is required, it is best to sample PMS 871 U in the intended sheen before committing to full production.
Compare PMS 871 U samples under consistent lighting and on the same substrate type whenever possible. Metallic colors can shift noticeably depending on light angle and surface smoothness.
Allow the paint to fully dry and cure before final evaluation. Early judgments can be misleading, especially for metallic Pantone colors, which often change slightly as they set.
Start with a clean, dry surface free of dust, oils, and residues. Degreasing is important for smooth substrates to help ensure proper adhesion.
Light scuffing may be appropriate depending on the material, followed by a test application to confirm appearance and coverage. This step is especially important for metallic colors like PMS 871 U, where surface condition can affect uniformity.
Unfortunately, no.
Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.
The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 871 U in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
