PMS 874 U is a Pantone PMS metallic gold with a warm, muted character and substantial visual weight. It reads as rich, earthy, and refined, with a subdued luster rather than a bright yellow shine.

The color has a dark overall appearance with an LRV of 17.6. It shows a warm yellow-gold tendency with moderate saturation and a restrained metallic effect.

The bronze-like undertone adds depth, while finish sensitivity means sheen and application method can noticeably affect brightness and uniformity.

PMS 874 U works well on smooth, well-prepared surfaces where metallic particles can align evenly and reflect consistently. Uneven substrates or inconsistent film thickness can lead to mottling, and compared with lighter golds this color reads darker and more grounded, especially under cooler lighting.

Similar colors:

PMS 873 U: lighter and brighter, with a more yellow-forward metallic appearance.
PMS 871 U: darker and more bronze, with reduced reflectivity.
PMS 875 U: slightly deeper and redder, with increased visual warmth.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 874 U

Is Pantone PMS 874 U appropriate for sign, display, or exhibit fabrication?

Yes. Pantone PMS 874 U is commonly specified in brand standards for signage, displays, and exhibit components. In these contexts, the Pantone code defines the visual color target rather than a specific paint formula. Ordering PMS 874 U paint is appropriate when your goal is to visually align fabricated elements with a brand reference.

Because appearance can change by substrate, finish, and lighting, it is best to evaluate PMS 874 U on the actual material being used. Sampling helps confirm approval before producing high-visibility display or exhibit pieces.

How much area does one spray can of Pantone PMS 874 U cover?

A single spray can of Pantone PMS 874 U typically covers about 10 to 12 square feet under ideal conditions. Actual coverage depends on surface texture, application technique, and the number of coats needed for uniform color.

Brand colors like PMS 874 U may require additional coats to achieve even appearance, especially on darker or porous substrates. For planning purposes, assume conservative coverage and consider ordering extra cans for test panels and consistency across parts.

How does Pantone PMS 874 U support a consistent brand experience?

Pantone PMS 874 U is part of the Pantone Matching System, which exists to create consistent brand color communication across vendors and materials. When a brand specifies PMS 874 U, it signals a visual target that should look consistent across signage, displays, marketing environments, and fabricated elements.

Using a Pantone matched paint helps align physical components with printed and digital brand references. Final appearance should always be evaluated in the installed environment, since lighting and finish can influence perceived color.

What surface preparation is recommended before applying Pantone PMS 874 U paint?

For best results with Pantone PMS 874 U, surfaces should be clean, dry, and free of oils, dust, or residues. Degreasing and wiping down the surface helps ensure proper adhesion and more uniform color.

Light scuffing may be appropriate on smooth or glossy materials, followed by cleaning. Always apply a small test area on the actual substrate to confirm appearance and coverage before completing the full project.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 874 U?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 874 U depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. Can I use the Pantone PMS 874 U for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 874 U in paint, we don't provide any crossover information.
