PMS 512 U is a Pantone PMS color commonly specified in brand and marketing systems, presenting a dark, cool-leaning purple with a rich, moody character. It conveys intensity, sophistication, and visual weight, making it suitable for controlled brand expressions rather than background neutrals.

The color appears very dark, with an LRV of 6.66. It reads as cool with a blue-violet tendency and shows high saturation with a subtle blue undertone that deepens its appearance.

PMS 512 U works well in controlled lighting where its depth can be appreciated without losing detail. Because of its darkness and saturation, it may require additional coats and careful surface preparation to achieve even coverage, especially over lighter or uneven substrates. Finish choice and lighting can significantly influence how dark or open the color appears.

Similar colors:

PMS 511 U: slightly darker and more muted, with less violet clarity.
PMS 513 U: lighter and more open, with a softer purple appearance.
PMS 513 C: brighter and more saturated, with increased visual intensity.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 512 U

What durability should I expect from PMS 512 U when ordered as spray paint?

PMS 512 U spray paint is a visual match to the Pantone reference, not a guarantee of durability on its own. Longevity depends on surface preparation, the paint type selected, whether a compatible clear topcoat is used, and the exposure environment. Indoor displays and short-term brand installations typically perform well with standard options. For higher handling, outdoor exposure, or longer installations, choose a paint system intended for those conditions and confirm performance with a test panel.

How do I correctly order paint matched to Pantone PMS 512 U on MyPerfectColor?

Start by selecting PMS 512 U as the color reference. Then choose the paint format that fits your application, such as spray paint or another available format. Select the paint type and sheen based on where and how the painted item will be used. Confirm quantity and review any options before checkout. If the project is high visibility or brand critical, ordering a sample first helps confirm appearance on your actual substrate.

Is PMS 512 U appropriate for signs, displays, and exhibit components?

Yes. PMS 512 U is commonly specified in brand standards for signs, displays, and exhibit elements where visual brand alignment is required. The Pantone code defines the color target, while the final appearance can vary by material, sheen, and lighting. For fabricated components, it is recommended to evaluate a painted sample on the actual substrate under expected lighting before full production.

What surface preparation is recommended before applying PMS 512 U paint?

Proper preparation helps the PMS 512 U color perform as expected. Surfaces should be clean, dry, and free of dust, oils, or residues. Many substrates benefit from light scuffing to improve adhesion, followed by cleaning. Use a primer if appropriate for the material. Always apply a small test area first to confirm adhesion, coverage, and appearance before proceeding with the full application.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 512 U?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 512 U depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. We do our best to make sure you get your paint on time. Learn more about paint lead times at MyPerfectColor.
Can I use the Pantone PMS 512 U for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

How much area will one spray can cover? And what is Pantone PMS 512 U spray paint made of?

To make spray paint matched to Pantone PMS 512 U. MyPerfectColor uses an acrylic enamel which is a fast-drying durable coating suitable for interior or exterior use. MyPerfectColor custom spray paint enables you to conveniently achieve a professional spray-smooth finish in any color in any sheen. Do I need a primer for Pantone PMS 512 U?
The need for primer for Pantone PMS 512 U depends on the type of paint, the substrate being painted and where it will be located. See our Primer Selection Table to see what primer you might need and learn more about when you might need a primer. Most people don't use a primer for a touch up paint application, but a primer may improve adhesion and is typically recommended for exterior applications.
How do I convert PMS 512 U to a different color from another paint company?

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 512 U in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
