Pantone™ PMS 488 U

PMS 488 U is a Pantone color standard, not a fixed paint formula. When you reorder PMS 488 U, visual consistency depends on keeping key variables the same.

To reduce variation between runs, use the same product type, sheen, and application method each time. Changes in finish or substrate can shift how the color appears even if the Pantone target is the same.

For brand critical work, approve a physical sample or drawdown and keep it as your reference for future orders. Evaluating reorders against the same reference under similar lighting conditions helps set realistic consistency expectations.

Whether you need a primer for PMS 488 U depends on the paint format, the substrate, and how the surface will be used. Smooth, sealed surfaces may not require primer, while raw, porous, or slick materials often do.

A primer can improve adhesion and help achieve more uniform color, especially if the surface is dark, uneven, or highly absorbent. This can also reduce the number of finish coats needed.

If you are unsure, testing PMS 488 U with and without primer on your actual substrate is the most reliable way to confirm performance before committing to a full application.

When using PMS 488 U in pop-ups or retail installations, evaluate the color under the same lighting where it will be displayed. Store lighting can noticeably change how warm or muted the color appears.

Durability requirements also matter. High contact areas or short install timelines may influence which paint format or finish is appropriate.

Before a large rollout, apply PMS 488 U to a sample panel using the actual substrate and finish. This allows teams to confirm color appearance, coverage, and overall suitability before full production.

A standard spray can of PMS 488 U typically covers about 8 to 12 square feet per coat under ideal conditions. Actual coverage can vary based on spray technique, surface texture, and how many coats are needed.

Highly visible brand colors often require multiple coats for even appearance, which increases total paint usage. Rough or porous surfaces will also reduce coverage per can.

For quantity planning, test one can on your actual surface to confirm coverage, then scale up based on the total area and number of coats required.

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

The 11oz spray will cover about 20 square feet per coat. Keep in mind that it is difficult to gauge how much spray you'll need as it is highly dependent on how it is applied. It is better to have too much than run short.
