Pantone™ PMS 486 U

PMS 486 U spray paint is mixed to visually match the Pantone reference, not to a single durability standard. Real world durability depends on surface preparation, the paint type selected, whether a clear topcoat is used, and the exposure environment.

For brand displays, signage, and marketing components, durability is usually sufficient when the surface is properly cleaned and primed. If the painted part will see frequent handling, outdoor exposure, or abrasion, choose a paint type and optional clear coat that fits those conditions and test a sample first.

Yes, PMS 486 U can be matched on metal parts, but preparation matters. Bare metal typically needs proper cleaning and priming. Existing powder coat should be clean and lightly scuffed to promote adhesion.

Be aware that the underlying coating color, surface texture, and gloss level can influence how the Pantone match appears. For brand critical applications, ordering a sample and viewing it on the actual metal substrate is recommended before committing to production.

Pantone colors like PMS 486 U can require additional coats to achieve even coverage, especially on darker substrates. Highly chromatic brand colors often have lower hide compared to neutral tones.

Using a compatible primer or a light base coat can help improve uniformity and reduce the total number of finish coats needed. Testing coverage on your actual substrate helps set realistic expectations for appearance and material usage.

The finish choice can noticeably change how PMS 486 U is perceived. Gloss finishes tend to increase color intensity and saturation, which can make brand colors appear more vivid. Matte finishes reduce glare but may appear slightly softer or lighter.

Consider viewing distance, lighting, and how the surface will be used. For high impact brand visuals, gloss is often preferred, while matte may work better where reflections are undesirable. A sample in both finishes can help confirm the right choice.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

The 11oz spray will cover about 20 square feet per coat. Keep in mind that it is difficult to gauge how much spray you'll need as it is highly dependent on how it is applied. It is better to have too much than run short.
