Pantone™ PMS 474 U

PMS 474 U is a Pantone reference standard, not a fixed paint formula. When you reorder PMS 474 U, visual consistency depends on keeping key variables the same. Use the same paint type, sheen, and application method each time, and evaluate color against the same Pantone reference under similar lighting.

For projects with repeat production or brand approval requirements, confirm and approve a physical sample from the first order and retain it as your comparison target for future runs. Changing finish, substrate, or lighting conditions can shift how PMS 474 U appears, even if the Pantone code stays the same.

Whether PMS 474 U paint needs a primer depends on the paint type, the substrate, and the exposure conditions. Primers are often recommended on raw, porous, or high-contrast surfaces to improve adhesion, coverage, and color uniformity.

If you are applying PMS 474 U over a previously coated surface or a material with known adhesion challenges, primer guidance should be reviewed before ordering. Using the correct primer can help the final color read closer to the intended Pantone reference.

Finish has a direct impact on how PMS 474 U is perceived. Glossier finishes typically appear brighter and more saturated, while matte finishes can make the same color look softer or slightly muted. Satin and semi-gloss finishes fall between those extremes.

Because Pantone PMS colors are visual targets, selecting the correct sheen is part of achieving an accurate brand appearance. Always evaluate PMS 474 U samples in the intended finish and lighting environment before committing to full production.

PMS 474 U is designed for brand color reproduction, not for touch-up or repair matching. If you need paint to visually blend with an existing painted surface, the most reliable path is to send a physical part for color matching.

Pantone-based matching aims to reproduce the PMS 474 U reference, which may not align with aged, field-applied, or previously mixed coatings. Sending a part allows matching to the actual surface rather than the Pantone standard.

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

The 11oz spray will cover about 20 square feet per coat. Keep in mind that it is difficult to gauge how much spray you'll need as it is highly dependent on how it is applied. It is better to have too much than run short.

We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
