PMS 446 U is a Pantone PMS color defined as a deep blue-gray neutral with extremely low saturation. It presents a subdued, serious, and visually grounding character commonly selected when color expression must remain restrained.
The color has very low lightness, with an LRV of 5.1, and a cool blue-gray tendency. Its saturation is minimal, placing it closer to charcoal than to a distinct hue, with a subtle blue undertone separating it from neutral black.
PMS 446 U works well in applications that require low reflectance and visual control without the starkness of pure black. Careful surface preparation and consistent application can help maintain uniformity, and lower-sheen finishes may help limit the visibility of surface imperfections under strong or directional lighting.
Similar colors: PMS 447 U: slightly darker and more neutral, with reduced blue presence.MyPerfectColor is the official licensee of Pantone and authorized to reproduce the Pantone™ PMS 446 U color in spray paint and other paints.

PMS 446 U is a Pantone PMS color target, not a paint formula, so coverage depends on the specific paint system and substrate. In general, Pantone-matched paints can vary in hide, especially when applied over contrasting base colors.
For PMS 446 U, plan on applying multiple coats to achieve a uniform appearance, particularly if you are covering a lighter or uneven surface. Using a compatible primer or ground coat can help stabilize the color and reduce the number of finish coats needed. Always evaluate coverage on a sample piece before committing to a full application.
Sheen has a direct impact on how PMS 446 U is perceived. Higher gloss levels tend to increase perceived depth and reflectivity, while lower sheen finishes reduce reflections and can make the color appear flatter.
When choosing a sheen for PMS 446 U, consider viewing distance, lighting, and the substrate. Because Pantone PMS colors are visual standards, it is recommended to confirm the color in the intended sheen with a sample, as the same color target can look different when applied in matte versus gloss finishes.
Yes, PMS 446 U is commonly used in prototypes and concept models where visual alignment to a brand standard is required. The Pantone PMS reference serves as the color target to communicate intent across teams and vendors.
For prototype workflows, select a paint format that matches how the part will be evaluated, such as spray paint for panels or assembled components. Review the painted sample under expected lighting conditions, since Pantone colors are sensitive to both surface texture and illumination.
When applying a PMS 446 U match to metal or previously powder-coated parts, surface preparation is critical. Existing coatings, gloss level, and surface smoothness can all influence the final appearance of the color.
Scuffing and proper cleaning help create a consistent surface, but even with good prep, PMS color matches can shift visually depending on the underlying coating and sheen. For brand-critical applications, it is best to test PMS 446 U on a prepared sample part and review it in context before full production.
Unfortunately, no.
Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.
The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 446 U in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
