Pantone™ PMS 431 U

PMS 431 U is a Pantone PMS reference color, and its perceived appearance can change noticeably based on finish. A gloss finish reflects more light, which can make PMS 431 U appear darker and slightly more saturated. A matte or flat finish absorbs more light, often making the same color look lighter or softer. Satin finishes typically fall between those extremes.

Because Pantone PMS codes define a color target, not a finish, you should choose the sheen that best matches how the color will be viewed in its final environment. Evaluating a sample in the intended finish and lighting is the most reliable way to confirm acceptance.

Paint matched to PMS 431 U is custom made to order based on the Pantone PMS reference. Because it is not an off-the-shelf color, changes after production are limited.

Before ordering, confirm the product format, sheen, and quantity, and consider ordering a sample if the application is high visibility or requires brand approval. Sampling helps reduce risk by allowing you to review color appearance on your actual substrate and under real lighting.

PMS 431 U is a relatively muted Pantone color, but like many brand colors, coverage and hide can still vary based on substrate, primer choice, and application method. Dark or uneven substrates may influence the final appearance.

To achieve uniform results, proper surface preparation and sufficient film build are important. In some cases, additional coats may be required to reach consistent color appearance, especially for brand-facing displays where visual uniformity matters.

Pantone PMS codes like PMS 431 U are intended for brand color reproduction, not for exact matching of an existing painted surface. Variations in substrate, age, and original coating can make Pantone-based matching insufficient for part-to-part accuracy.

If exact visual alignment to an existing component is required, the correct path is to send a physical part for evaluation and matching. Pantone matching is best used when the Pantone reference itself is the approval standard.

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

The 11oz spray will cover about 20 square feet per coat. Keep in mind that it is difficult to gauge how much spray you'll need as it is highly dependent on how it is applied. It is better to have too much than run short.

We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
