PMS 274 U is a Pantone PMS color identified as a deep purple with a cool, blue-forward character, commonly referenced in brand standards that call for gravitas, discretion, and low reflectance. The overall vibe is dark, controlled, subdued, and formal, with visual weight that reads nearly black in low light.

The color appears extremely dark, with an LRV of 1.56, and it leans cool with a noticeable blue influence rather than red. It maintains relatively high saturation for such a dark color, giving it depth, while the undertone reads as blue-violet rather than neutral purple.

PMS 274 U works well where a deep purple is needed without visual brightness, such as background fields or structural brand elements meant to recede. Because of its very low lightness, careful surface preparation and even film build can help avoid patchiness, and in low or indirect lighting it may read closer to near-black than other dark purples.

Similar colors:
PMS 275 U: slightly lighter and clearer, with more visible violet separation.
PMS 273 U: darker and cooler, with increased blue depth and reduced openness.
PMS 2685 U: lighter and more chromatic, with a more noticeable purple presence.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 274 U

Why is Pantone PMS 274 U not recommended for touch-up or repair of existing finishes?

Pantone PMS 274 U is a visual color reference, not a coating formula or finish specification. It does not define sheen, film build, substrate, or aging characteristics of an existing coating. Because of this, using PMS 274 U as a touch-up target can result in visible differences when applied next to an existing finish.

Pantone PMS colors are intended to communicate a brand color target across vendors and materials. For repairs or touch-ups, a sample or OEM-specific match of the original coating is typically required to achieve acceptable visual continuity.

Can Pantone PMS 274 U matched paint be used on plastics or low-energy surfaces?

Pantone PMS 274 U can be matched into paint for plastic parts, but plastics vary widely in surface energy and paint adhesion. Many plastics require a specific adhesion promoter or primer to achieve proper bonding.

Because substrate type and preparation affect both adhesion and color appearance, testing the PMS 274 U paint on the actual plastic material is strongly recommended before production. This helps confirm both durability and visual acceptance.

Is Pantone PMS 274 U appropriate for signage, displays, or exhibit fabrication?

Yes. Pantone PMS 274 U is commonly specified for signage, display components, and exhibit fabrication where brand color accuracy is required. In these contexts, the Pantone reference serves as the approved visual target rather than a repair standard.

Because materials, finishes, and lighting conditions can influence how the color is perceived, evaluating a physical sample of PMS 274 U paint on the actual substrate is recommended for high-visibility or brand-critical elements.

What should I consider when applying Pantone PMS 274 U to metal or powder-coated parts?

When applying a Pantone PMS 274 U match to metal, surface preparation is important. Existing coatings, powder coat finishes, and gloss levels can affect both adhesion and the final color appearance.

Cleaning and scuffing may be required, and differences in sheen between the original surface and the new coating can make the color appear lighter or darker. Producing and reviewing a sample on the prepared metal surface helps confirm that the PMS 274 U match meets visual expectations before full production.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 274 U?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 274 U depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. We do our best to make sure you get your paint on time. Learn more about paint lead times at MyPerfectColor.
Can I use the Pantone PMS 274 U for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
