PMS 260 U is a Pantone PMS color commonly specified for brand and marketing environments where a bold purple tone is required. It presents a dark, intense, expressive, dramatic, and brand-forward visual character.

The color appears very dark, with a low Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of 4.1. It reads as cool overall with a blue-influenced purple character and maintains high saturation, resulting in strong chromatic intensity. A subtle blue-magenta undertone becomes more apparent in lower lighting conditions.

PMS 260 U works well in brand-facing elements where depth and saturation support recognition and contrast. Due to its darkness and saturation, it may benefit from careful surface preparation and sufficient film build to achieve uniform coverage, especially over lighter or high-contrast substrates. Finish choice and lighting can significantly affect perceived depth, with higher sheens emphasizing saturation and matte finishes slightly muting the color.

Similar colors:
PMS 259 U: slightly lighter and more open, with less visual density.
PMS 261 U: darker and cooler, with increased blue influence.
PMS 262 U: deeper and more neutral, with reduced chromatic intensity.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 260 U

How should PMS 260 U be used for prototypes and concept models?

PMS 260 U is a Pantone PMS color reference, not a paint formula. For prototypes and concept models, the goal is visual brand alignment rather than material-specific performance.

Order PMS 260 U as a Pantone matched paint in a format that suits your prototype build, such as spray paint or brush-in-cap bottles. Apply it to the actual substrate used in the model and review it under the lighting where the prototype will be shown. This helps confirm perceived color before moving to production or broader rollout.

How do I get help choosing the right paint type for PMS 260 U?

If you are unsure which paint type is best for PMS 260 U, contact MyPerfectColor with details about your project. Useful details include the substrate, whether the piece is indoors or outdoors, the desired finish, and how the color will be viewed.

This information helps determine whether spray paint, paint pens, brush-in-cap bottles, epoxy, urethane, or another available format is appropriate for achieving a visually accurate Pantone match.

What does the "U" in PMS 260 U mean, and why does it matter when ordering?

The "U" in PMS 260 U indicates a specific Pantone reference context. Pantone codes can include suffixes or series that affect how the color is defined and expected to appear.

Before ordering, confirm that PMS 260 U is the exact code specified in your brand standards or project documentation. Ordering the wrong Pantone reference, even with the same number, can result in a visible color difference and approval issues.

Can PMS 260 U matched paint be used on plastics or low-energy surfaces?

PMS 260 U matched paint can be applied to plastics, but plastics vary widely in surface energy and paint adhesion. Some plastics require specific primers or surface preparation for the paint to adhere properly.

Always test the PMS 260 U paint on the actual plastic material before production. This confirms adhesion, coverage, and visual appearance, and helps avoid issues when scaling up to final parts.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 260 U?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 260 U depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. Can I use the Pantone PMS 260 U for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

The need for primer for Pantone PMS 260 U depends on the type of paint, the substrate being painted and where it will be located. See our Primer Selection Table to see what primer you might need and learn more about when you might need a primer. Most people don't use a primer for a touch up paint application, but a primer may improve adhesion and is typically recommended for exterior applications.
How do I convert PMS 260 U to a different color from another paint company?

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 260 U in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
