Pantone™ PMS 258 U

Pantone PMS 258 U includes a suffix that indicates the original Pantone reference series. The "U" denotes an uncoated paper reference in the Pantone system. This matters because the same base number can look different across series, and your brand standards or documentation may specify a particular suffix.

Before ordering, confirm that PMS 258 U is the exact reference called out in your brand guidelines or project files. Ordering a different suffix or series can lead to a visible mismatch when your painted item is compared to printed materials or approved color standards.

The finish you choose will change how PMS 258 U is perceived. A gloss finish typically increases saturation and visual punch, which can make the color appear richer under good lighting. A matte finish reduces glare and reflections, which can help with readability and consistency under varied lighting.

Consider viewing distance and lighting conditions. For close viewing or environments with strong lights, matte may control reflections better. For displays meant to stand out from a distance, gloss can enhance impact. When brand approval is critical, testing both finishes is recommended.

Pantone PMS 258 U can be matched in paint for plastics, but plastics vary widely in surface energy and adhesion behavior. Some plastics may require specific primers or surface preparation steps to achieve proper bonding and uniform appearance.

Because highly saturated colors like PMS 258 U can also have lower hide, testing on the actual plastic substrate is important before production. This helps confirm adhesion, coverage, and final appearance under your intended lighting.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

The 11oz spray will cover about 20 square feet per coat. Keep in mind that it is difficult to gauge how much spray you'll need as it is highly dependent on how it is applied. It is better to have too much than run short.
