PMS 1655 U is a Pantone PMS color used as a standardized visual target in branding, display fabrication, and marketing applications. It presents a strong, energetic presence with a bold, warm, saturated, attention-directing, and assertive visual character.

The color reads as mid-to-dark in value with an LRV of 28.13 and shows a clearly warm, orange-red tendency. It is highly saturated with a warm orange undertone that contributes to its intense visual presence.

PMS 1655 U performs well in brand-facing displays and fabricated elements where color intensity and recognition are priorities. Its saturation can affect coverage and appearance, so evaluating samples on the intended substrate, finish, and lighting can help confirm expectations.

Similar colors:

PMS 165 U: slightly less saturated and marginally softer in visual intensity.
PMS 1655 C: similar in hue but typically appears cleaner and slightly brighter in many paint finishes.
PMS 1645 U: lighter and more open, with reduced visual weight compared to PMS 1655 U.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 1655 U

How does surface texture affect the appearance of Pantone PMS 1655 U when painted?

Surface texture changes how light reflects, which can alter how PMS 1655 U is perceived even when the color match is correct. Smooth, glossy surfaces reflect more light and can make the color appear brighter and more saturated. Matte or textured surfaces create more shadowing and diffuse reflection, which can make the same color look darker or less vivid.

If brand appearance matters, evaluate PMS 1655 U on the actual substrate and texture you plan to use. This helps confirm that the perceived color aligns with expectations under real lighting and viewing conditions.

How does surface texture affect the appearance of PMS 1655 U once it is painted?

PMS 1655 U is a vivid Pantone color, and surface texture can noticeably change how it appears. Smooth substrates reflect light more evenly, which can make PMS 1655 U look brighter and more saturated. Textured or uneven surfaces introduce shadowing and diffuse reflection, which can make the same color appear darker or slightly muted.

For brand-facing applications, evaluate PMS 1655 U on the actual substrate and finish you plan to use. This helps confirm that the perceived brightness and saturation align with brand expectations before full production.

Can Pantone PMS 1655 U paint be applied to plastic or low-energy surfaces?

PMS 1655 U can be produced as a Pantone-matched paint, but plastics vary widely in surface energy and adhesion behavior. Some plastics require special surface prep or a specific primer to achieve proper adhesion and durability.

Before committing to production, test the PMS 1655 U paint on the exact plastic material you plan to use, using the same prep and application method. This confirms both adhesion and final appearance, which is especially important for saturated Pantone colors.

Can PMS 1655 U be applied to plastic or other low-energy surfaces?

PMS 1655 U can be matched into paint for plastic parts, but plastics vary widely in surface energy and paint acceptance. Some plastics require specific primers or surface preparation steps to achieve proper adhesion and uniform color appearance.

Because PMS 1655 U is highly saturated, differences in adhesion or film build can also affect how even the color looks. Always test the complete paint system on the actual plastic before committing to a production run.

If my existing component is labeled Pantone PMS 1655 U, is a Pantone match the best way to repaint it?

Pantone PMS 1655 U is a color communication standard, not a record of how an existing part was originally coated or how it has aged. If you need a result that visually blends with a specific existing component, a Pantone match alone may not account for substrate color, finish, or wear.

For part-specific matching, the most reliable path is to send a physical sample to be matched directly. Pantone matching is best used when PMS 1655 U is the brand color target for new displays, signage, or components rather than matching an existing coated part.

If PMS 1655 U is specified but I need to match an existing painted part, what is the best approach?

A Pantone PMS code like PMS 1655 U defines a brand color target, not the exact appearance of an existing painted surface. If you need the new paint to visually align with a specific part that is already in use, the most reliable path is to provide a physical sample for matching.

Matching directly to the part accounts for substrate, finish, aging, and application method, which a Pantone reference alone cannot capture. This approach is recommended when visual alignment to an existing component matters more than strict adherence to the Pantone standard.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 1655 U for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 1655 U in paint, we don't provide any crossover information.
