Pantone® PMS 2174 C is a Pantone Matching System color recognized for its deep, saturated blue-violet appearance. The color delivers a strong, vivid, and assertive presence, suited to projects where high visibility and precise brand color are critical—such as marketing displays and industrial applications.

PMS 2174 C features a dark value with a low LRV of 17.41, contributing to significant depth. This color is predominantly cool, defined by an intense blue-violet tone and high chromatic saturation. Undertones are primarily blue with a marked violet influence, providing richness and complexity. The visual effect can shift with different finishes; variations in gloss or sheen impact depth and vibrancy, so finish selection should adhere to brand guidelines.

This color is well-suited to branded displays, event settings, and architectural elements that demand strong color impact and brand consistency. Application in varied lighting conditions may alter perceived intensity and undertone. Due to its high saturation, PMS 2174 C may require priming and several coats on light substrates for consistent coverage. Compared to other blues or violets, this color appears especially bold and cool, offering a technical aesthetic.

Similar colors:
PMS 2746 C is similar but darker and exhibits a deeper, more subdued blue-violet character.

PMS 2727 C is lighter and slightly less saturated, providing a brighter, less intense visual effect.

PMS 2087 C is similar in saturation but presents a warmer, more purple undertone compared to PMS 2174 C.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 2174 C

How do finish and sheen affect the appearance of Pantone PMS 2174 C in real-world applications?

The finish or sheen you select for Pantone PMS 2174 C will noticeably affect how the color is perceived in your project. A gloss finish can increase brightness and amplify the bold, saturated qualities of PMS 2174 C, making it appear even more vivid and deep. Satin finishes tend to balance vibrancy with a softer appearance, while matte finishes reduce reflected light, making the color look slightly deeper and less intense. To maintain color fidelity and brand consistency, always choose the finish specified in your branding guidelines or prototype standards, as variations in sheen may shift the perceived depth and intensity of this blue-violet.

When should I order a standard Pantone PMS 2174 C match for my project?

A standard Pantone PMS 2174 C match is appropriate when your project involves brand-facing displays, signage, exhibit components, or prototypes where accurate visual representation of the PMS 2174 C color is the primary goal. This approach is also suitable for marketing installations and temporary brand experiences where visual alignment with Pantone 2174 C is more important than physical substrate or long-term performance. You should use a standard PMS match if you do not require substrate-specific adjustments or formal approval workflows.

How can I get help choosing the best paint type for Pantone PMS 2174 C?

If you need guidance selecting the appropriate paint type for Pantone PMS 2174 C, contact MyPerfectColor with details about your project. Provide information such as the substrate you are painting, whether the application is indoors or outdoors, exposure conditions, and your desired finish. MyPerfectColor can recommend the most suitable product format-such as spray paint, paint pens, or house paint-so you achieve accurate and brand-consistent results with PMS 2174 C.

Is Pantone PMS 2174 C widely used by major brands or in well-known applications?

Pantone PMS 2174 C is a bold, saturated blue-violet chosen for projects requiring strong visual impact and precise color standards. While it is well-suited to branded displays, event settings, and architectural elements, there is no widely cited association with a specific major brand, team, or institution. Companies may select this color for unique high-visibility marketing purposes or display prototypes where a deep blue-violet is specified, but usage should be confirmed directly with the brand or project reference.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 2174 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

How do I convert PMS 2174 C to a different color from another paint company?

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 2174 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
