PMS 7542 C is part of the Pantone PMS (Pantone Matching System) collection, a global color communication and specification standard for consistent color reproduction in branding and design. This color exhibits a calm, cool, and technical character with a distinctly modern, muted presence. It is perceived as subtle, restrained, and semi-light, making it suitable for applications where a soft but defined color is needed without strong vibrancy.

PMS 7542 C appears as a light-mid blue-gray; LRV is 49.89, which places it near the midpoint on a light/dark scale. The color presents a cool tendency, driven by its blue visible content and hue angle near blue on the color wheel. PMS 7542 C is moderately muted (low to moderate chroma), resulting in a subdued, restrained appearance. The color displays a blue undertone with a clear gray influence, preventing it from reading as pure blue in most settings. Finish choice can further affect the perception of its coolness and level of reflectance; glossier finishes may enhance the blue, while matte finishes emphasize the muted, gray character.

PMS 7542 C works well in environments and applications where a subtle, sophisticated blue is needed without the visual weight or energy of more vibrant blues. It is effective for backgrounds, accent bands, and secondary brand elements in corporate, education, or healthcare settings where understated color coordinates are specified. When using this color, evaluate samples under the intended lighting, as blue-grays can appear flatter or more pronounced depending on ambient temperature and intensity. Differences in surface finish may highlight either the grayness or the cool blue, so aligning finish with intended design outcome is recommended. In comparison to other blue-grays, PMS 7542 C is notably more muted and less saturated, minimizing the risk of overwhelming nearby visual elements.

Similar colors:

PMS 5435 C – Similar overall but lighter and with a softer, more neutral (less blue) cast.

PMS 5425 C – Slightly darker and displays a stronger gray influence, making it read as more subdued.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 7542 C

Why is it important to use a licensed source like MyPerfectColor for Pantone PMS 7542 C paint reproduction?

Pantone PMS 7542 C is a standardized brand color, and using a licensed source ensures the paint you receive is reproduced with the highest fidelity to the original Pantone reference. MyPerfectColor is authorized to reproduce Pantone PMS colors, which means your paint order for PMS 7542 C will be matched to the official Pantone specification. This helps support visual consistency across brand, display, and marketing applications by minimizing the risk of color mismatch that can occur with unlicensed or generic sources.

How do I decide between a matte or gloss finish for PMS 7542 C in a brand application?

For PMS 7542 C, the choice between matte and gloss affects both appearance and performance in your brand setting. Matte finishes will reduce glare and emphasize the muted, gray quality of this blue-gray, which is helpful for close-up or under direct lighting. Gloss finishes can make PMS 7542 C appear more vivid and reflective, emphasizing its blue undertone, but may introduce glare, especially under strong lights or at certain viewing angles. Consider viewing distance, lighting conditions, and whether you want a more subtle (matte) or visually punchy (gloss) effect before selecting a finish. Evaluating samples in your actual environment is recommended for best results.

Why might PMS 7542 C look different on various materials and surfaces?

PMS 7542 C, like other Pantone PMS colors, can appear different depending on the substrate due to factors such as absorption, texture, and reflectivity. For example, paint applied to metal, plastic, or wood may vary slightly in appearance because of how the surface interacts with light and pigment. To ensure PMS 7542 C meets your expectations, it is best to evaluate painted samples on all actual materials used in your final project before full production. This helps confirm that brand and visual standards are met in real-world conditions.

What should I consider when applying PMS 7542 C to plastic or low-energy surfaces?

Not all plastics or low-surface-energy materials will accept paint without specialized preparation. When using PMS 7542 C on plastic, proper surface cleaning and a suitable primer may be required to achieve good adhesion and color consistency. Plastic types can vary widely in how they interact with coatings, so always test PMS 7542 C paint and primer on your specific material before full-scale production. This reduces the risk of adhesion loss or color difference, helping ensure the finished result aligns with Pantone brand standards.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 7542 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
