PMS Black 3 C is part of the Pantone PMS collection, a system widely used for consistent brand and print reproduction. This color is a dark, muted black with a subtle green cast, imparting an understated, modern, and technical aesthetic. Its low reflectance contributes to a subdued, professional appearance. The vibe is muted, grounded, controlled, technical, and somewhat organic due to its undertone.

PMS Black 3 C appears very dark with an LRV of 2.3, making it nearly black in most lighting conditions. The color shows a cool tendency, influenced by its green undertone. The saturation is low to moderate for a black; the color has a muted chromaticity rather than a deep, pure black. The undertone is noticeably greenish, which differentiates it from neutral or blue-based blacks. The color is moderately sensitive to finish; matte surfaces amplify its muted quality, whereas glossier finishes may slightly sharpen its green cast.

PMS Black 3 C is frequently chosen when a traditional black is too stark but a warm or blue-black is unsuitable. It works well in identity systems requiring a subdued, less reflective black that maintains brand distinction without overwhelming other elements. This color may shift perceptibly depending on lighting type (daylight vs. fluorescent can emphasize its greenish nature), so on-site sampling is important. When compared to analogous Pantone blacks, this color's subtle green bias requires thoughtful pairing to avoid unintended color interactions.

Similar colors:
PMS Black C – A standard, neutral black; lacks the green undertone of Black 3 C.

PMS 5535 C – A much lighter, more overtly green-black; lighter and more obviously chromatic.

PMS Black 2 C – Slightly warmer and browner in undertone; less cool than Black 3 C.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS Black 3 C

What should I know about matching PMS Black 3 C across different materials and finishes?

Matching PMS Black 3 C exactly across varied materials and finishes can be challenging. The Pantone PMS standard provides a color target, not a formula, and different substrates or gloss levels may affect the perceived shade and undertone. MyPerfectColor formulates paint to achieve brand-consistent results, but minor variations are possible. Reviewing samples on your actual material under intended lighting helps ensure your expectations are met for branding and display projects.

Can PMS Black 3 C paint be directly applied to plastics or low-energy surfaces?

Not all plastics or low-energy surfaces allow optimal adhesion with standard PMS Black 3 C paint. Some plastics require specific primers or surface treatments before painting for durable results. It is best to test PMS Black 3 C on a sample of your actual substrate using your desired application method before proceeding to full production, and consult with MyPerfectColor if you need recommendations on primers or compatibility.

How does texture impact the appearance of PMS Black 3 C?

The texture of your surface changes how PMS Black 3 C will look once applied. Matte finishes and rougher textures tend to mute the color and may make the green undertone less obvious, while glossier or smoother surfaces can make the color appear deeper and may highlight its subtle green cast. Always evaluate the finish type on your intended substrate when precision is important for brand applications.

What is the best way to approve PMS Black 3 C for my branding project?

The recommended approach is to order a sample of PMS Black 3 C in the finish and format you will use, then evaluate it on your actual substrate under the lighting conditions where it will be seen. This helps catch any issues with appearance, undertone, or finish before committing to a larger order. Approving the sample as part of your workflow ensures color expectations are met for brand applications and installations.

Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. Can I use the Pantone PMS Black 3 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
