PMS Hexachrome Black is a Pantone Matching System (PMS) standard color valued for its role in highly controlled brand, marketing, and print environments. This color is defined by its nearly absolute darkness, extremely low reflectance, and a neutral, muted character. The visual effect is strong, technical, stable, and unambiguous, aligning with applications where visual neutrality and stark contrast are operational requirements.

PMS Hexachrome Black appears significantly dark, with an LRV of 1.56, making it among the deepest non-specialty blacks in the Pantone system.

The color is neutral-cool in temperature, with no significant visible undertone.

This color exhibits extremely low chroma, producing no evident hue or color cast.

PMS Hexachrome Black maintains consistent appearance across matte, satin, or gloss finishes, though higher gloss may introduce more pronounced surface reflections.

The color’s finish sensitivity is low for hue shift, but gloss can impact depth perception.

PMS Hexachrome Black functions effectively in environments prioritizing high-contrast content, branding control, and photographic or graphic reproduction fidelity. Due to its extreme darkness, surface imperfections, dust, and fingerprints may be more apparent, especially in higher-gloss finishes. Light sources with cool or neutral temperature will preserve its intended appearance, whereas warm light can introduce a subtle brown or gray shift. Compared to other Pantone blacks, this color offers the least influence from undertones or color bias, supporting precise specification needs.

Similar colors:

  • PMS Black C shares a very deep, neutral black appearance but may be marginally less neutral, resulting in slightly higher reflectivity.
  • PMS Process Black is similar but can present as lighter and may exhibit more grayness under some lighting or in thinner film builds.
  • PMS Black 6 C is another deep black, but tends to appear cooler and more blue-toned in certain applications.
  • PMS Black 2 C offers a softer, warmer black with a mild brown undertone, less stark than Hexachrome Black.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS Hexachrome Black

Why is Pantone PMS Hexachrome Black often specified for sign, display, and exhibit fabrication?

Pantone PMS Hexachrome Black is specified in sign, display, and exhibit fabrication to ensure a consistent, professional look that aligns with strict brand requirements. Its deep, neutral black character provides strong contrast and visual control across fabricated elements. Using the PMS code helps different vendors and manufacturers target the same standardized color for a unified result. For accuracy, always sample PMS Hexachrome Black on the real substrate to verify appearance before running a full production batch.

How should I use samples of PMS Hexachrome Black in my brand approval workflow?

For projects requiring formal sign-off, order a sample of PMS Hexachrome Black in the exact paint format and on the same substrate planned for your final build. Review the sample under the lighting conditions where the finished element will be displayed. This process minimizes surprises and supports approval by all stakeholders before you commit to a larger volume. Sampling is especially important for deep blacks like PMS Hexachrome Black, since finish and lighting can influence the color appearance.

Does MyPerfectColor provide licensed and authorized paint for PMS Hexachrome Black?

Yes, MyPerfectColor is authorized to reproduce Pantone PMS colors, including PMS Hexachrome Black, as paint. Using a licensed source is important because Pantone PMS colors are standardized references, and authorized reproduction helps ensure the closest possible match to the target color in branding, display, and marketing applications.

When do I need to use a primer with PMS Hexachrome Black paint?

Primer requirements for PMS Hexachrome Black depend on the paint type, your substrate, and whether the surface is new, previously coated, or exposed to the elements. A primer is typically recommended for uncoated, porous, or glossy surfaces to improve adhesion and ensure even coverage. For best results, consult paint format guidance or reach out for substrate-specific primer recommendations before starting your project.

Can I use the Pantone PMS Hexachrome Black for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
