PMS Blue 072 C is a Pantone Matching System color defined within the Pantone PMS collection. This color is characterized by a strong, pronounced blue appearance with significant chromatic intensity, a very low light reflectance value (LRV: 2.99), a cool temperature, and a clean, technical, and modern vibe. It is typically encountered in brand and environmental graphics applications where a pure, saturated blue is needed for clarity and visual presence. PMS Blue 072 C is recognized for its capacity to deliver consistent color communication across a range of substrates and production methods.
PMS Blue 072 C appears very dark in value, with a notably low LRV, making it one of the deeper blues in the Pantone PMS range. The color has a pronounced cool tendency. The color exhibits high saturation, producing a vivid and intense blue tone. PMS Blue 072 C is perceived to have a strong, clean blue undertone, without discernable secondary notes. The color’s saturation and darkness make it somewhat sensitive to gloss level and lighting; glossy finishes may enhance its intensity, while matte finishes can mute its vibrancy.
PMS Blue 072 C is widely used when a brand requires a distinct, high-impact blue for signage, display, or environmental branding elements and seeks to avoid the ambiguity of less saturated or muted blues. Due to its depth and saturation, it may require additional coats for full opacity, especially on lighter substrates. The color may shift subtly depending on lighting conditions and finish selection, so evaluating actual paint samples under installation lighting is recommended. When substituted for less chromatic blues, PMS Blue 072 C will appear much more vivid and commanding.
This Pantone PMS color is defined by the Pantone Matching System standard. Evaluate the color using a physical Pantone reference and a real paint sample in the intended lighting and finish. Paint appearance varies by finish and lighting.

The appearance of PMS Blue 072 C can change significantly based on the chosen finish. A gloss or high-gloss finish tends to make this deep, saturated blue appear more intense and vivid, amplifying its impact under bright lighting. Matte or satin finishes can mute the vibrancy and make the color seem slightly lighter or less saturated. Because PMS Blue 072 C is a very dark and strong blue, evaluating real paint samples in the selected finish and actual installation lighting is strongly recommended to ensure expectations align with the final result.
When applying PMS Blue 072 C to metal or powder-coated parts, proper surface preparation is critical for appearance and adhesion. Existing coatings, gloss level, and substrate texture will all affect how the color looks and performs. Scuffing and thoroughly cleaning the surface before painting helps the new color adhere and minimizes unexpected finish variations. Because highly saturated colors like PMS Blue 072 C can be sensitive to the substrate color and texture, always evaluate a sample on the actual surface in final lighting to confirm appearance before proceeding with the full project.
PMS Blue 072 C is commonly referenced in branding for educational and institutional identity systems. It is cited in published design sources as a standard for achieving a bold, pure blue in print and environmental graphics. Major publishing companies such as Penguin Random House and certain global brands have used this color in secondary palettes or as a defining element in their display and marketing materials. These examples highlight the color''s ability to create visual clarity and brand distinction in high-impact settings.
Ordering a standard Pantone PMS match for PMS Blue 072 C is most appropriate when you need to achieve visual brand consistency for displays, signage, prototypes, exhibit components, or marketing installations where the Pantone reference is the specified color target. This approach works well when visual alignment is more important than exact substrate-specific matching. For high-visibility permanent installations or when using multiple materials, it is advisable to confirm appearance using samples under final lighting conditions before full-scale production.
Unfortunately, no.
Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.
The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
