PMS 8140 C is part of the Pantone PMS system, recognized for its distinctive metallic finish and rich magenta-purple hue. The color presents a bold, saturated presence with an overall cool tone and gives off a vibrant yet sophisticated impression. As a metallic, it carries a technical and contemporary vibe, often perceived as striking, vivid, trendy, and energetic. Its LRV of 20.14 indicates a relatively low reflectance, meaning the color reads as deep but luminous thanks to its metallic properties.

PMS 8140 C appears deep and medium-dark, as indicated by its LRV of 20.14. The color leans cool due to its core magenta-purple composition and metallic sheen. PMS 8140 C is highly saturated, registering as vibrant and eye-catching. The magenta undertone is noticeable, imparting a bold and energetic flavor. The metallic finish can heighten brightness and may reveal subtle shifts depending on the surface angle and lighting conditions. This color’s metallic component makes finish selection highly relevant to the final visual effect—surface smoothness and even application are especially important.

PMS 8140 C works well in branding contexts where a contemporary, dynamic metallic purple inflection is desired and visibility is a priority—especially for promotional displays, event builds, or branded prototypes. The metallic formulation requires careful surface prep and uniform application to maximize reflectance and avoid streaking or patchiness. It behaves as deeper and cooler compared to non-metallic purples, and its luminous quality is affected more by lighting and viewing angle than non-metallic colors. Evaluate using both physical Pantone reference and real paint sample in target lighting and finish. Users should note that metallic paints often require additional coats to achieve full evenness and saturation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 8140 C

What should I expect when reordering PMS 8140 C, and how do I ensure consistency across batches?

To achieve visually consistent results with PMS 8140 C across multiple orders, use the same product type, sheen, and application method every time. Always reference the same Pantone PMS 8140 C standard for approvals. Because PMS 8140 C is a highly saturated metallic, even small changes in product, surface prep, or finish can noticeably shift the appearance, especially under varying lighting. For critical projects or repeat work, keep a retained control sample from your first batch and have future runs compared against it under your typical project lighting.

How do I choose the correct paint type for PMS 8140 C for interior versus exterior applications?

The best paint type for PMS 8140 C depends on where and how it will be used. For exterior or outdoor brand displays, select a paint formula rated for exterior durability and weather resistance. For interior applications such as event props or branded environments, interior-only paint is suitable and may offer more finish options. If you need PMS 8140 C for both settings, specify your intended use so you receive the right formula for your project's exposure and performance needs.

Can PMS 8140 C be converted exactly to a color from another paint brand?

PMS 8140 C is a Pantone PMS standard and does not have exact equivalents in other paint brand collections. Pantone colors, especially vivid metallic shades like PMS 8140 C, are unique and may not align with other systems. Attempting to cross-reference can result in noticeable color differences and should be avoided if visual brand consistency is critical. Use a direct Pantone match when PMS 8140 C is specified as the standard.

What is the best way to apply PMS 8140 C spray paint for optimal coverage and finish?

PMS 8140 C is a deep, metallic color that benefits from several light, even spray coats rather than a heavy application. Allow time for each coat to set before recoating. This technique builds color saturation, helps prevent runs or streaks, and improves the overall uniformity of the metallic effect. Using patience with multiple light coats is especially important with PMS 8140 C to achieve a smooth, visually consistent brand appearance.

All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 8140 C depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. Can I use the Pantone PMS 8140 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
