PMS 728 C (Pantone Matching System / Pantone PMS) is a light to mid-tone tan that appears understated, natural, and quiet. The color’s vibe is professional, subtle, approachable, and grounding, with a practical neutrality that blends well across a range of environments.

PMS 728 C presents as a light to mid-value tan, with an LRV of 45.16 indicating moderate reflectance. The color has a warm tendency, with undertones resembling soft beige or light sand. PMS 728 C demonstrates moderate saturation, giving it a gentle, muted appearance rather than overt vibrance. The undertone is warm and slightly red–yellow, contributing to a sense of comfort and approachability. The color is relatively stable across finishes but may appear slightly brighter in high-gloss compared to matte; undertone remains largely consistent.

PMS 728 C is frequently selected when a soft, approachable neutral is needed for branding, signage, or display components that should not overpower other visual elements. Under different lighting, it maintains a stable appearance, but significantly warm lighting can intensify its beige undertones. Surface texture and finish can subtly affect perceived depth, so sample the color on the actual substrate and under intended lighting when final appearance is critical. Compared to other beiges, PMS 728 C is neither especially yellow nor pink, allowing for versatile brand application without strong color bias.

Similar colors:
PMS 729 C – Slightly lighter and more subdued, with less chromatic warmth.

PMS 467 C – Warmer and more yellow, with a brighter beige look.

PMS 465 C – Darker and richer, introducing more depth and a more pronounced tan effect.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 728 C

Can PMS 728 C be matched exactly using other paint company color collections?

PMS 728 C is a Pantone PMS standard, and each paint brand creates its own unique palettes with different formulas and naming systems. Most brands do not offer reliable cross-references to Pantone PMS colors, especially for achieving the precise look intended for PMS 728 C. For brand consistency, specify PMS 728 C directly rather than using a listed equivalent in another system, as even minor differences in shade or finish can be noticeable in marketing and display contexts.

How should I choose the right paint type for PMS 728 C when painting interior versus exterior surfaces?

When specifying PMS 728 C for a project, select an interior-grade paint for surfaces that will be displayed indoors and are not exposed to direct sunlight, weather, or moisture. For brand installations outdoors or in environments exposed to the elements, use an exterior-rated paint to ensure best color durability and performance. Confirm the intended use before ordering, as changing the product type or sheen may affect the appearance of PMS 728 C.

How can I keep PMS 728 C looking consistent if I need to reorder more paint in the future?

To maintain a consistent appearance of PMS 728 C across multiple orders, it is important to always request the same paint type and sheen. Matching substrate and surface preparation, as well as using the original reference standard for approval, will help ensure the color remains visually consistent. If your project has formal brand requirements, keep a sample or approved panel on hand to verify against future batches before application.

What surface preparation steps are important before applying PMS 728 C matched paint?

Before applying paint matched to PMS 728 C, be sure to clean the substrate thoroughly to remove dust, oils, and residues. For most surfaces, light scuffing can improve adhesion, especially on glossy or smooth materials. Allow cleaned surfaces to dry completely. Always test the color and finish on a small area under expected lighting to confirm results before proceeding with the full application.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 728 C?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 728 C depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. We do our best to make sure you get your paint on time. Learn more about paint lead times at MyPerfectColor.
Can I use the Pantone PMS 728 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

The need for primer for Pantone PMS 728 C depends on the type of paint, the substrate being painted and where it will be located. See our Primer Selection Table to see what primer you might need and learn more about when you might need a primer. Most people don't use a primer for a touch up paint application, but a primer may improve adhesion and is typically recommended for exterior applications.
How do I convert PMS 728 C to a different color from another paint company?

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 728 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
