Pantone™ PMS 538 C

The safety and VOC (volatile organic compounds) requirements when using paint matched to Pantone PMS 538 C depend on the specific product and format you select, such as spray paint or housepaint. Always review the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for your chosen product and follow all recommended handling, ventilation, and application guidelines. For branding and display projects, use protective equipment as directed, and ensure work areas are properly ventilated during painting and drying.

For Pantone PMS 538 C projects, your paint format should align with where your component will be used. Choose an interior-rated version for indoor displays, fixtures, or signage where weather exposure is not a concern. Select an exterior-rated product for outdoor installations, exhibits, or environments exposed to sun, moisture, or temperature changes. Carefully match paint type to project needs, as interior paints may not withstand exterior conditions and exterior paints may have different sheen and appearance indoors.

Surface texture can noticeably influence how Pantone PMS 538 C appears. Smooth surfaces reflect light evenly, which keeps the color looking lighter and more consistent. Rough or matte textures scatter light, which can make PMS 538 C appear slightly darker, less vibrant, or more muted. For brand-sensitive displays, consider how both texture and nearby lighting will impact perceived color and evaluate samples on the actual substrate whenever possible.

For the most consistent finish when spraying Pantone PMS 538 C, apply several thin coats instead of one heavy coat. Allow each coat to dry briefly to the touch before applying the next. This approach helps achieve even coverage, reduces runs, and improves overall color consistency, especially on high-visibility brand or display projects.

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

The 11oz spray will cover about 20 square feet per coat. Keep in mind that it is difficult to gauge how much spray you'll need as it is highly dependent on how it is applied. It is better to have too much than run short.

We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
