PMS 523 C is part of the Pantone PMS system, a widely used color matching standard in branding, packaging, and display fabrication. This color presents as a muted, medium-light lavender with a gentle and subdued appearance. The vibe is calm, understated, contemporary, and distinctly professional, making it suitable for applications requiring a cooler-toned soft purple that is visually consistent across materials.

PMS 523 C appears as a medium-light color, with a Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of 49.89. This color has a cool tendency, owing to its placement in the purple family and a hue angle around the 315° region. The color displays moderate saturation, providing a noticeable yet restrained presence. It exhibits a subtle, bluish undertone, moving it closer to a cool lavender rather than a warm mauve. PMS 523 C’s appearance may be sensitive to finish, with glossier finishes amplifying depth and soft finishes emphasizing its muted nature.

PMS 523 C is often specified in brand palettes seeking a distinctive yet non-dominating lavender accent. It is commonly used for signage, retail branding components, and display systems where a recognizable but understated purple is desired.

PMS 523 C works well in environments and brand contexts that benefit from a restrained purple with cool undertones. It maintains stability across a range of lighting, but shifts cooler under daylight or high-CRI sources. When selecting finishes, note that higher gloss may cause the color to appear deeper and more vibrant, while matte finishes accentuate its subtlety. Compared to other purples, PMS 523 C delivers a lower-key visual signature, reducing the risk of visual fatigue or color clash in multi-color branding schemes.

Similar colors:
PMS 524 C: Slightly lighter and less saturated, with a more pastel appearance.

PMS 522 C: A bit darker and more chromatic, imparting a stronger purple impression.

PMS 7444 C: Cooler and bluer in tone, with a more neutral, less lavender character.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 523 C

Can I specify Pantone PMS 523 C for touching up or recoating an existing finish?

Pantone PMS 523 C is not recommended as a touch-up specification for existing products or coatings. The Pantone PMS system provides a color target but does not define critical factors like sheen, texture, or substrate. Touch-up situations require a close match to the original coating's appearance and material. Because Pantone references do not account for these variables, matching PMS 523 C exactly on an existing finish is unlikely. For brand-facing or new projects, PMS 523 C is suitable, but do not use it as a proxy for repairing or touching up prior work.

What should I consider when applying PMS 523 C matched paint to plastics or low-energy surfaces?

Plastics and other low-surface-energy materials vary widely in how well they accept paint, even when matched to PMS 523 C. Many plastics require special surface preparation, including cleaning and scuffing, and often a specific adhesion-promoting primer. For critical projects or production runs, always test PMS 523 C paint on a sample of your actual plastic substrate before full application. This reduces the risk of adhesion problems or color inconsistency due to substrate differences.

Will PMS 523 C cover in a single coat on most surfaces?

PMS 523 C is a muted, medium-light purple that may require more than one coat for uniform coverage, especially over contrasting or dark colors. Pantone colors with moderate to high saturation often have lower hide, and achieving the correct visual appearance can depend on using the recommended primer and applying additional coats. For best results, plan for at least two coats and check coverage after the first application to meet your quality standards.

What preparation steps are needed when applying PMS 523 C to metal or existing powder-coated surfaces?

Before applying PMS 523 C matched paint to metal or powder-coated parts, clean and scuff the surface to promote adhesion. The gloss and texture of the underlying material can influence how PMS 523 C appears, with glossier finishes intensifying color depth and matte surfaces making it look more subdued. For brand-critical applications, test a sample panel to confirm that the finish and color meet expectations under the intended lighting and application conditions.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 523 C?

Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. Can I use the Pantone PMS 523 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
