Pantone™ PMS 523 C

Pantone PMS 523 C is not recommended as a touch-up specification for existing products or coatings. The Pantone PMS system provides a color target but does not define critical factors like sheen, texture, or substrate. Touch-up situations require a close match to the original coating's appearance and material. Because Pantone references do not account for these variables, matching PMS 523 C exactly on an existing finish is unlikely. For brand-facing or new projects, PMS 523 C is suitable, but do not use it as a proxy for repairing or touching up prior work.

Plastics and other low-surface-energy materials vary widely in how well they accept paint, even when matched to PMS 523 C. Many plastics require special surface preparation, including cleaning and scuffing, and often a specific adhesion-promoting primer. For critical projects or production runs, always test PMS 523 C paint on a sample of your actual plastic substrate before full application. This reduces the risk of adhesion problems or color inconsistency due to substrate differences.

PMS 523 C is a muted, medium-light purple that may require more than one coat for uniform coverage, especially over contrasting or dark colors. Pantone colors with moderate to high saturation often have lower hide, and achieving the correct visual appearance can depend on using the recommended primer and applying additional coats. For best results, plan for at least two coats and check coverage after the first application to meet your quality standards.

Before applying PMS 523 C matched paint to metal or powder-coated parts, clean and scuff the surface to promote adhesion. The gloss and texture of the underlying material can influence how PMS 523 C appears, with glossier finishes intensifying color depth and matte surfaces making it look more subdued. For brand-critical applications, test a sample panel to confirm that the finish and color meet expectations under the intended lighting and application conditions.

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

The 11oz spray will cover about 20 square feet per coat. Keep in mind that it is difficult to gauge how much spray you'll need as it is highly dependent on how it is applied. It is better to have too much than run short.

We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
