Pantone® PMS 5165 C is a nuanced, medium-light purple with a subtle, professional vibe. The color sits in the lavender family, conveying restraint, subtlety, and a soft, technical personality. This shade is often described as understated, contemporary, and slightly cool, making it appropriate for applications requiring both visibility and a muted, controlled visual impact.

PMS 5165 C exhibits a medium-light appearance (LRV 58.47). The color shows a cool tendency with a noticeable lavender to grape overtone. Saturation is moderate, avoiding extremes of either intensity or dullness. Undertones are muted, with a gentle, slightly gray cast that minimizes overt gaudiness. The finish may influence the balance between its lavender hue and gray undertone; higher gloss can reveal more chromatic intensity, while matte or eggshell increases its softness.

PMS 5165 C works well when a subtle, differentiated accent or background is needed in branded displays, retail prototypes, or marketing installations. It presents as distinctly purple without overwhelming the visual field, and is less likely to compete with primary branding colors. Lighting conditions and finish selection should be evaluated carefully, as this color can shift in perceived warmth or coolness depending on environmental lighting. Compared to other purples, it is less saturated and somewhat grayer, reducing the risk of color clash or visual fatigue in extended use.

Similar colors:
PMS 522 C is lighter and slightly more pastel, introducing more airiness.

PMS 528 C is deeper and more chromatic, registering as a more vivid purple.

PMS 5215 C is more muted and gray, with a cooler, less colorful effect.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 5165 C

Why might PMS 5165 C look different on plastic, metal, and wood even if the paint code is the same?

PMS 5165 C can appear different across various materials because factors like texture, absorbency, and gloss affect how the color is seen. For example, paint on metal might look brighter and more vivid than the same color on unfinished wood. Absorptive materials often produce a softer or grayer appearance, while smooth, reflective substrates can enhance saturation. For brand consistency, always evaluate PMS 5165 C on a sample of the actual material and finish planned for your project before full-scale work begins.

How should I use samples of PMS 5165 C in a brand approval process?

Before committing to a large production run with PMS 5165 C, it is recommended to order a small sample in the actual paint type and sheen you intend to use. Evaluate the sample on the intended substrate and under the final lighting conditions. This ensures decision makers can sign off on the true color appearance, reducing the risk of color disputes and costly rework after installation.

Can I return PMS 5165 C paint if the color does not match my expectations?

PMS 5165 C paint is custom made to order to match the Pantone standard, so returns and exchanges are generally not possible if the product was made as requested. Carefully select the format, finish, and substrate, and consider ordering a sample first. Confirm all approvals before placing large orders as changing specifications after production can lead to additional cost and delays.

What safety factors should I consider when using PMS 5165 C paint products?

The safety requirements when using PMS 5165 C paint depend on the type of product you select, such as spray paint, urethane, or epoxy. Always review the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) provided for your chosen format. Follow proper ventilation, personal protective equipment guidelines, and safe handling instructions for your work environment to reduce risk during application.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 5165 C?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 5165 C depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. We do our best to make sure you get your paint on time. Learn more about paint lead times at MyPerfectColor.
Can I use the Pantone PMS 5165 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
