PMS 491 C (Pantone Matching System) is a dark, subdued reddish-brown widely used in professional brand contexts. The color presents an earthy, reserved, and stable vibe, coming across as both grounded and subtly warm. It is part of the Pantone PMS collection, which standardizes color reproduction across print, digital, paint, and material applications for brand and display purposes.

PMS 491 C displays a dark appearance, with low light reflectance (LRV of 5.84). The color leans warm due to its evident red-brown undertone. The chroma is moderate, making the color muted rather than highly saturated or vibrant. The undertone is distinctly reddish, providing a subtle visual warmth without appearing bright. This color is generally stable across matte and satin finishes but may appear even more muted and deep in gloss or under low lighting conditions.

PMS 491 C works well for projects requiring a dependable, low-profile yet visually substantive brand presence. It is especially effective where color control and brand consistency are required, such as signage, display fabrication, or environments demanding a subdued accent. When considering this color, be aware that its darkness and red undertone may shift slightly depending on lighting—warm lighting intensifies the redness, while cool lighting can mute it. Surface sheen will also impact perceived depth, with higher gloss finishes making the color appear deeper and richer. Compared to similar colors, PMS 491 C remains more muted and less saturated, so it achieves a stable, reserved effect rather than boldness.

Similar colors:
PMS 490 C is darker and slightly more neutral, delivering a more subdued effect.

PMS 483 C is lighter and warmer, making it less subdued and more visibly red.

PMS 4975 C is darker and cooler, moving further toward a deep brown-black appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 491 C

Why might PMS 491 C look different on metal versus plastic or wood surfaces?

PMS 491 C can appear different depending on the substrate because each material absorbs and reflects paint in its own way. For example, metals are typically smoother and more reflective, which can make the color seem deeper or shinier, while wood or plastic may absorb more paint and have more visible texture, resulting in a slightly muted look. These variations are normal and highlight why it is important to evaluate PMS 491 C on the same material and finish you plan to use in your final project. This will help ensure brand consistency across all components.

How should I choose between matte and gloss for PMS 491 C in a brand display application?

The finish you choose for PMS 491 C will affect both the appearance and visual impact of your brand display. Gloss finishes make PMS 491 C appear deeper and richer but can create glare under strong lighting. Matte and satin finishes reduce glare, giving a more muted and even look, but the color may appear slightly lighter or less intense from a distance. Consider how the display will be lit and how close viewers will be. If your application is viewed up close under direct lighting, matte may be best to avoid reflections. For maximum color depth and boldness, especially in controlled lighting, gloss is a strong choice.

Does the suffix in PMS 491 C matter when ordering paint?

Yes, the suffix 'C' in PMS 491 C stands for 'coated' and indicates the original Pantone reference standard for that color. Pantone codes may include suffixes such as C (coated), U (uncoated), or M (matte), and these can affect the appearance. Before ordering, always check your brand guidelines or material specifications to confirm you are referencing the correct Pantone code, including the suffix. This helps ensure the color matches your intended brand standard and avoids costly rework.

What is the typical lead time for paint made to match PMS 491 C?

Paint matched to PMS 491 C is custom made to order for each request. The lead time can vary depending on the paint format you choose and current production volume, but most orders ship within a few business days. Larger or more specialized products may take longer. If you have a firm deadline for a marketing or display project, it is best to order early and factor in both production and shipping time.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 491 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
