PMS 446 C, from the Pantone PMS system, is a very dark, subdued gray with olive green undertones. This color projects a muted, reserved, and technical vibe, useful for corporate, industrial, or institutional contexts that prefer low-profile visual impact. It is commonly leveraged for functional or secondary elements in branding systems where subtlety, seriousness, or authority is desired.

PMS 446 C presents as very dark, with a low LRV of 5.09, making it nearly black in lower light. The color exhibits a cool to neutral overall appearance, with a perceptible greenish-olive undertone. Saturation is low; the color appears soft and muted rather than vivid or pure. The undertone remains stable under most lighting, but certain artificial lights may amplify the olive tint. PMS 446 C can be affected by finish, with higher gloss increasing perceived depth but not significantly altering the undertone.

PMS 446 C works well for applications requiring a dark, neutral color that avoids the starkness of jet black but achieves a grounded, professional look. It is suitable for branding elements, displays, or backgrounds where visual dominance is not desired. When specifying PMS 446 C, confirm lighting conditions and finish to ensure the undertone remains acceptable. Compared to similar dark colors, PMS 446 C may read slightly more green, which can become more pronounced on larger surfaces or in cooler lighting environments.

Similar colors:
PMS 447 C: Slightly darker and even more neutral, with less perceptible green; better suited for maximum subtlety.

PMS 426 C: More of a solid charcoal black, lacks the olive-green undertone of PMS 446 C.

PMS 431 C: Noticeably lighter and cooler, appearing more bluish gray than olive.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 446 C

How do I make sure PMS 446 C is the correct Pantone code for my application?

Pantone codes like PMS 446 C can include suffixes and series information that matter for brand specifications. Always confirm with your brand guidelines or project documentation that PMS 446 C is the intended reference before ordering. Different Pantone codes or suffixes may correspond to similar but not identical colors, so it is important to reference the exact code shown in your requirements for consistent results.

What are the basic steps for preparing a surface before applying Pantone PMS 446 C paint?

To get consistent results with Pantone PMS 446 C, start by cleaning the surface thoroughly to remove dust, oils, and contaminants. Degrease where necessary, and lightly scuff glossy surfaces to promote adhesion. For best results, test PMS 446 C on a small area first to confirm compatibility and color appearance. Proper prep helps ensure the painted color matches your brand expectations and adheres well across substrates.

How is Pantone PMS 446 C paint used in prototyping or concept model workflows?

Pantone PMS 446 C is often specified when prototypes or concept models must visually align with brand standards. Selecting PMS 446 C for these uses helps teams present accurate brand colors early in the product development process. Choose the paint format that fits your prototype substrate, such as spray paint or brush-in-cap bottles, and plan an evaluation step under the actual lighting where the prototype will be viewed to confirm brand intent is achieved.

How does sheen affect the appearance of Pantone PMS 446 C in my project?

The sheen or finish selected for Pantone PMS 446 C can influence how dark or deep the color looks and may slightly affect how the olive undertone presents. Higher gloss sheens can add perceived depth but do not change the undertone significantly. When specifying a sheen for PMS 446 C, consider the viewing distance, substrate texture, and the intended brand impact to ensure the color reads as expected in the final environment.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 446 C?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 446 C depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. Can I use the Pantone PMS 446 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
