PMS 431 C is a Pantone Matching System (PMS) standard color, often described as a deep, understated blue-gray with professional and technical overtones. The color has a grounded, muted, and cool appearance, lending itself to sober and controlled visual contexts. The low light reflectance value signals a distinct darkness, enhancing its utility for contrast and visual weight in design systems. The color is suitable for identity elements where sophistication and neutrality are operationally important.

PMS 431 C appears as a dark shade; its LRV of 13.84 indicates relatively low reflectance. The color has a cool undertone, residing in the blue-to-gray spectrum. Saturation levels are moderate to low, resulting in a muted, controlled effect rather than high chroma. Undertones tend toward a steely blue, with visible gray-muting that reduces visual temperature. The color’s appearance can shift toward deeper or more muted blue depending on lighting and finish. Surface sheen notably affects perceived depth and contrast for PMS 431 C.

PMS 431 C works effectively for elements intended to signal authority, dependability, and neutrality, such as corporate displays, signage, and branded environments. Consider lighting conditions carefully, as this color’s muted blue-gray can appear nearly charcoal or even cooler in fluorescent or LED lighting. Finish selection impacts visual depth, with higher gloss finishes appearing slightly more saturated and flatter finishes intensifying the muted undertones. Unlike brighter or more chromatic Pantone colors, PMS 431 C holds visual steadiness under a range of lighting types but may require precise substrate preparation to avoid visible surface imperfections due to its darkness.

Similar colors:
PMS 430 C: A lighter and more neutral gray compared to PMS 431 C, with less visible blue influence.

PMS 432 C: A darker and more saturated variant, skewing further towards a deep blue-gray.

PMS 7545 C: Notably warmer, with a greenish undertone differentiating it from the steely blue of PMS 431 C.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 431 C

What is the difference between the Pantone PMS 431 C color name and code, and how do I ensure I order the correct version?

Pantone PMS 431 C is identified by a standardized code, where 'PMS' stands for Pantone Matching System, '431' is the specific color number, and 'C' indicates the coated finish reference. Always specify the full code 'PMS 431 C' when ordering paint for brand, display, or marketing use. Relying only on the color name or omitting the code or suffix can lead to the wrong shade or finish. Double-check your brand guidelines and confirm that the order details match your required Pantone target to avoid confusion or mismatched results.

Where can I find the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for paint made in Pantone PMS 431 C?

The Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for Pantone PMS 431 C paint is linked to the specific type of paint or coating you select, not the Pantone color itself. Review the SDS library or the product details page for your chosen spray paint, paint pen, or other format to access the correct safety and handling information. If you need a specific SDS before ordering, locate it by product type and then confirm it applies to your intended use of PMS 431 C.

How closely will Pantone PMS 431 C paint match my Pantone book, and what differences should I expect?

Pantone books serve as color reference standards for PMS 431 C but are typically printed on specific paper types with controlled lighting conditions. When PMS 431 C is matched in paint, differences may occur due to choice of sheen, substrate, and application method. For best results, sample the painted color on the same material and with the finish you plan to use. This helps you assess any visual shifts in depth or undertone compared to your Pantone book reference before full production or installation.

What best practices help achieve a uniform appearance when using Pantone PMS 431 C over large areas?

To keep Pantone PMS 431 C looking consistent across large surfaces, plan for even application and adequate coverage. Use the same product, application tool, and number of coats throughout the project. Dark, muted colors like PMS 431 C can show variation if spray technique or rolling patterns change during application. Allow complete drying between coats and inspect for patchiness before proceeding. Surface preparation also matters, as this dark shade will make imperfections more visible if not addressed before painting.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 431 C?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 431 C depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. Can I use the Pantone PMS 431 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 431 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information.
