PMS 429 C is part of the Pantone Matching System, widely used in branding and specification. This color presents a cool, restrained vibe—described as understated, technical, reliable, and neutral. It balances moderate lightness with subdued chroma, providing a controlled and businesslike appearance suitable for environments that prioritize clarity and consistency.

PMS 429 C appears medium-light in value (LRV 42.19). The color tends cool rather than warm. The saturation is low, resulting in a muted and understated effect. This color has subtle blue undertones that reinforce its cool, professional look. The color’s moderate lightness can be sensitive to finish, appearing brighter in high-gloss or slightly deeper in matte applications.

PMS 429 C is often used as a background or supporting color in visual identity systems requiring a cool neutral. The color is specified for signage, wayfinding, and display components requiring brand consistency.

PMS 429 C works well in environments where a neutral but present visual element is desired, such as office settings, branded environments, or directional graphics. When applying this color, consider lighting conditions—cool lighting emphasizes its blue undertone, while warm lighting may slightly soften its appearance. The color maintains its neutrality compared to other grays, resisting the appearance of overt warmth or high reflectivity, but will vary in brightness depending on the finish selected.

This Pantone PMS color is defined by the Pantone Matching System standard. Evaluate the color using a physical Pantone reference and a real paint sample in the intended lighting and finish. Paint appearance varies by finish and lighting.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 429 C

How closely does PMS 429 C paint match what I see in my Pantone book?

Pantone books provide the official reference standard for PMS 429 C. Paint colors are matched visually to these references, but actual painted results can differ based on sheen, substrate, and lighting. Variations between the printed swatch and a painted surface are normal, especially between finishes like gloss and matte. For the most reliable results, always compare a painted sample of PMS 429 C to your Pantone book under the same lighting and on the actual substrate you will use in your project. This helps ensure your expectations for brand accuracy are met before a full production run.

What should I consider when applying PMS 429 C to metal or powder-coated surfaces?

If you are using PMS 429 C on metal or over a powder-coated part, surface prep is important. Properly clean and scuff the surface to promote adhesion and even coverage. Pre-existing coatings, textures, or gloss levels can all affect how PMS 429 C appears after painting. Differences in sheen may change the visual brightness or undertone of the color. Evaluate a sample panel on your actual substrate before committing to production to confirm appearance and finish compatibility.

How do I ensure PMS 429 C looks right in my pop-up or retail environment?

When using PMS 429 C for pop-ups, retail displays, or brand experiences, evaluate the color under your actual lighting before rolling out the installation. Lighting can shift how the gray and its undertones appear, and durability requirements may affect your choice of paint type. Test a painted sample onsite to verify both color consistency and wear performance. This approach helps align your results with brand standards and supports confident decisions for larger projects.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 429 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
