Pantone® PMS 424 C. Paint and spray paint. MyPerfectColor is the official licensee of Pantone and authorized to reproduce the Pantone Matching System colors in spray paint and other paints.

PMS 424 C is part of the Pantone PMS system, a standardized collection widely used in branding, marketing, and industrial design. This color embodies a cool, discreet, and practical character, with an understated and professional vibe. It is often selected for its ability to create visual neutrality and support strong contrast without distracting from primary brand colors or content elements.

PMS 424 C appears as a medium-dark gray, reflecting an LRV of 19.27, which places it clearly in the darker tier of neutral grays.

The color tends toward a cool, bluish undertone, thanks to its position in the hue family and its qualitative undertone.

This color displays low chroma, resulting in a muted, subdued appearance.

The color resists warm cast and retains its neutral-to-cool impression under most standard lighting conditions.

PMS 424 C can be sensitive to finish, with higher sheens increasing its perceived depth and cooler impression; matte finishes will emphasize its understated quality.

PMS 424 C is often used as a secondary or background color in brand identity systems, especially where a neutral, professional appearance is desired.

The color is used in signage, architectural elements, and exhibit displays to provide visual grounding and clarity without overwhelming featured brand colors.

PMS 424 C works well when a restrained and contemporary gray is needed to support or balance more saturated colors within a brand palette. It maintains its integrity across varying product substrates and lighting, though it can appear cooler or slightly bluer in cooler light sources. Finish selection impacts its visual weight and chromatic perception—choosing a glossier finish may deepen the apparent color and amplify coolness. Surface preparation should ensure a uniform substrate, as uneven textures can accentuate subtle shifts in undertone. Compared to similar grays, PMS 424 C holds a muted chroma and a distinctly cool profile, making it less prone to shifting toward beige or taupe under differing environmental conditions.

Similar colors:

  • PMS 423 C – A lighter, slightly softer gray with a similar cool undertone.
  • PMS 425 C – A darker and richer gray with increased depth and slightly more chromatic intensity.
  • PMS Cool Gray 7 C – A comparable value but with slightly more warmth and a more neutral character.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 424 C

How does surface texture impact the appearance of Pantone PMS 424 C paint?

The surface texture can significantly influence how Pantone PMS 424 C appears once applied. On smooth surfaces, PMS 424 C will look more uniform and slightly deeper, as light reflects evenly. On textured surfaces, the same color can appear lighter or darker depending on how shadows and highlights fall, and the cooler undertone may be emphasized or reduced. These effects mean that brand-critical projects should evaluate samples on the actual substrate and finish to ensure PMS 424 C delivers the intended visual consistency.

What are the considerations for using Pantone PMS 424 C paint for interior versus exterior applications?

For Pantone PMS 424 C, choose a paint type based on where the item will be used. For interior projects, select an interior formula suited to displays, signage, or architectural elements not exposed to weather. For exterior applications such as outdoor signage or structures, use an exterior-grade version to ensure durability and retention of the PMS 424 C color under sun and moisture exposure. Always specify the intended use when ordering to get the right product for your needs.

Why does authorized reproduction matter for Pantone PMS 424 C paint?

Pantone PMS 424 C is a standardized color requiring accurate reproduction for brand and marketing applications. Ordering from an authorized Pantone licensee ensures PMS 424 C is mixed to the official color standard, which is vital for brand consistency across different products and substrates. This reduces the risk of visible color variation in high-visibility installations where correct representation of PMS 424 C is necessary.

If I need to match an existing product that uses Pantone PMS 424 C, is ordering PMS 424 C paint always the right solution?

No. If you are trying to match an existing product for blend-in results, especially across different materials or finishes, simply specifying Pantone PMS 424 C may not guarantee an exact match. In situations requiring precision, such as part replacement or finishing next to existing elements, it is best to send a physical part for custom matching. Use standard PMS 424 C paint when the main objective is brand color consistency for new items, displays, or marketing installations.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 424 C?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 424 C depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. We do our best to make sure you get your paint on time. Learn more about paint lead times at MyPerfectColor.
Can I use the Pantone PMS 424 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

How do I convert PMS 424 C to a different color from another paint company?

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 424 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information.
