PMS 423 C is part of the Pantone PMS (Pantone Matching System) collection, which provides standardized color specification for brand and marketing applications. PMS 423 C appears as a muted, neutral gray with a controlled, professional character. The color conveys an understated, composed, and flexible vibe, making it suitable for environments requiring visual clarity and non-distracting backgrounds.

PMS 423 C displays a moderate lightness, presenting as a mid-tone, neither especially dark nor especially light (LRV 29.25). The color is categorized as cool-toned, with a slight bluish undertone that prevents it from appearing warm or beige. PMS 423 C has low chroma, providing a restrained, unsaturated appearance that emphasizes neutrality over vibrancy. The undertone is subtly bluish, which can become more or less noticeable depending on adjacent colors and lighting. This color is not especially sensitive to sheen but may appear slightly crisper in higher-gloss or metallic finishes.

PMS 423 C is most effective when a neutral, consistent gray is needed for background fields, secondary graphic elements, or substrates intended to support primary brand colors. It maintains stability in a range of artificial and natural lighting conditions but may pick up cool undertones under daylight or cool LED lamps. When viewing or applying this color, compare it in the intended finish, as higher-gloss options can increase perceived clarity. PMS 423 C stands apart from warmer grays, displaying less tendency to shift toward taupe or beige under various light sources.

Similar colors:
PMS 421 C – Slightly lighter and more silvery, with a lower apparent chroma.

PMS 424 C – Slightly darker and more assertive, with a deeper gray quality.

PMS Cool Gray 5 C – Comparable lightness but less neutral, with a more pronounced cool-blue overtone.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 423 C

Can I substitute Pantone PMS 423 C with a similar color from another paint brand?

Pantone PMS 423 C is defined by the Pantone Matching System, which provides a standardized target for brand consistency. Most mainstream paint brands have their own unique palettes and do not offer true Pantone matches. Cross-referencing to other brands is rarely exact and can lead to visible differences, especially in demanding applications. For brand and marketing work where color accuracy is important, always specify and order paint mixed to the actual Pantone PMS 423 C standard rather than attempting to substitute with a near match from another line.

How do I order paint matched to Pantone PMS 423 C on MyPerfectColor?

To purchase paint matched to Pantone PMS 423 C, first select the preferred paint type such as spray paint, paint pen, or another available format. Next, choose the desired finish or sheen, for example matte or gloss, to align with your brand or display goals. Specify the quantity you need, and review available options. If your application requires a sample or mockup first, consider ordering a smaller size to confirm appearance before committing to full production. Double check that Pantone PMS 423 C is listed as your color target at checkout to ensure accuracy in your order.

How does the finish affect the appearance of Pantone PMS 423 C when applied?

The finish or sheen you select for Pantone PMS 423 C will influence its perceived brightness, clarity, and visual impact. On higher-gloss surfaces, PMS 423 C may appear crisper, with slight increases in perceived brightness and subtle highlights. Matte or satin finishes will provide a more muted look that minimizes glare, which may emphasize the color's neutral qualities. For brand and display work, test samples in the intended finish and lighting conditions to ensure PMS 423 C matches your expectations for visual consistency and tone.

What steps help achieve a uniform result when applying Pantone PMS 423 C over a large display surface?

To maintain a consistent appearance of Pantone PMS 423 C on large areas, use the same paint batch and application method across the entire project. Plan for full, even coverage by applying paint in continuous sections and overlapping passes as needed. If multiple coats are required, ensure complete drying between coats and use consistent techniques for each layer. Avoid starting and stopping in the middle of visible surfaces, as this can create variation. Review the results under the final lighting conditions to confirm uniformity before installation or project completion.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 423 C?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 423 C depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. Can I use the Pantone PMS 423 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 423 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information.
