PMS 408 C is part of the Pantone Matching System (Pantone PMS), designed for precise color communication in branding, marketing, and industrial design. This color delivers a subdued, grounded, and professional aesthetic, often perceived as practical, technical, and sophisticated. The overall vibe is calm and unobtrusive, with a natural, stable look suitable for identity elements and display components seeking a non-distracting neutral.

PMS 408 C exhibits moderate lightness, with a numeric LRV of 32.8.

The color appears as a cool, muted taupe with a gray-brown undertone.

This color shows low saturation, resulting in a subtle and conservative appearance.

The undertone leans to the cool side of neutral due to the presence of gray.

The color’s appearance is generally stable across different finishes but may shift slightly toward a warmer tone in higher gloss applications.

PMS 408 C works well in environments and displays where a professional, understated neutral is required for visual balance or background elements. Use this color when seeking to avoid strong visual dominance or when supporting other, more vibrant brand colors. Consider surface prep and substrate evenness, as mid-tone neutrals can reveal minor surface imperfections more readily than darker or lighter colors. Lighting will have a moderate effect, sometimes making the taupe undertone more apparent. When used alongside similar neutrals, PMS 408 C will read as slightly cooler and more technical.

Similar colors:

  • PMS 409 C: Lighter and slightly warmer, providing a softer, more beige-inflected neutral.
  • PMS 410 C: Darker and more muted, offering increased depth and a more pronounced gray base.
  • PMS 7530 C: Similar darkness but warmer, showing more of a brownish cast compared to the cooler undertone of PMS 408 C.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 408 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
