PMS 402 C is part of the Pantone Matching System (PMS) collection, widely used in brand and specification paint applications where accurate color matching is critical across various substrates. This color delivers a restrained, neutral, and grounded appearance, often sought for its practical, non-dominant presence in visual branding systems. The overall vibe is subdued, professional, understated, and balanced, making it compatible with situations where background uniformity and subtle contrast are desired.

PMS 402 C presents as a medium-light tone with a moderate reflectance (LRV 37.97).

The color has a warm bias, with beige and soft brown tendencies.

PMS 402 C has low chroma, resulting in a desaturated, neutral look.

The undertone of this color is soft taupe, falling between beige and gray with an earthy warmth.

This color remains stable across a range of paint finishes, though gloss levels can slightly intensify warmth.

PMS 402 C functions effectively in settings that require a neutral background or secondary brand color, supporting clear communication without drawing attention away from primary visual elements.

It is less susceptible to dramatic shifts under varied lighting compared to very cool or highly chromatic colors, but it can appear warmer in incandescent or low-Kelvin lighting.

Precise surface preparation is important to maintain uniformity, particularly in large-format or matte applications, where minor imperfections may be more visible than with deeper or richer hues.

When specifying PMS 402 C, review both substrate and finish to ensure the intended visual outcome is preserved.

Similar colors:

  • PMS 400 C: Lighter and less warm, offering a more off-white, cooler approach.
  • PMS 401 C: Slightly lighter and more muted, with reduced warmth and stronger gray undertone.
  • PMS 403 C: Slightly darker and more taupe, introducing a touch more depth and grayness.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 402 C

What are the best practices for comparing PMS 402 C paint samples during an approval process?

For accurate approval of PMS 402 C, always compare samples under the same lighting conditions and with the intended substrate. Allow all panels or drawdowns to fully dry and cure, since PMS 402 C can shift slightly in warmth or reflectance until the coating stabilizes. Review multiple samples side by side if possible, and avoid making decisions in mixed or changing lighting environments. These steps help ensure consistent, brand-aligned results for PMS 402 C.

What is the typical lead time to produce paint matched to Pantone PMS 402 C?

Paint matched to Pantone PMS 402 C is made to order. Production lead time depends on the specific paint format you select and current production volume. Most standard orders for PMS 402 C, including spray paint and other branding formats, typically require several business days before shipping. Allow extra time if you have project deadlines, and check product-specific lead time details at checkout.

How can I be sure I am ordering the correct version of PMS 402 C for my brand specification?

Pantone codes like PMS 402 C may include suffixes such as 'C' for coated or 'U' for uncoated, and these details can impact which reference your brand requires. Always confirm the exact Pantone code, including any suffix, from your brand standards or project documentation before ordering. This ensures you receive paint that aligns with the intended color target for PMS 402 C.

Should I choose matte or gloss for my PMS 402 C brand paint application?

The choice between matte and gloss for PMS 402 C affects both the appearance and the way the color is perceived under lighting. Matte finishes reduce glare and provide a subtle, neutral look, but may make minor surface imperfections more noticeable on large areas. Gloss finishes can intensify warmth and add punch, especially when viewed from a distance or under strong lighting, but may introduce reflections. Consider your display environment, expected viewing distance, and brand guidance when selecting the appropriate sheen for PMS 402 C.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 402 C?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 402 C depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. Can I use the Pantone PMS 402 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
