PMS 400 C, part of the Pantone PMS (Pantone Matching System) collection, is a light neutral gray frequently characterized as calm, understated, contemporary, and versatile. Its moderate light reflectance value supports practical visibility and readability. This color is often selected for its balanced neutrality and fit for both supporting and primary visual roles, especially where subtlety and professional tone are prioritized.

PMS 400 C exhibits a light value, supported by a numeric LRV of 58.47. The color presents a cool temperature, with undertones that lean slightly toward green, contributing to its calming effect. The chroma is low, resulting in soft, muted saturation. PMS 400 C reads as neutral with a subtle cool bias, avoiding overt warmth or blue tones. This color can show sensitivity to finish, appearing lighter and less pronounced in glossy finishes and flatter in matte applications.

PMS 400 C performs well as a background or supporting color in brand environments, displays, and printed materials. It is particularly effective in projects where a non-distracting, clean, and professional appearance is needed. Users should evaluate this color under final lighting and finish, as cool grays can shift in appearance depending on surrounding hues and ambient light sources. Compared to similar colors, PMS 400 C maintains a stable, understated neutrality without veering overly blue or beige, making it operationally dependable in a variety of brand and signage applications.

Similar colors:

PMS 427 C: Slightly lighter and softer, with lower chroma and less apparent coolness.

PMS 429 C: Darker and with a stronger apparent blue undertone, resulting in a cooler, more businesslike appearance.

PMS 441 C: Slightly warmer and marginally darker, showing more of a greenish cast.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 400 C

What does ordering paint matched to Pantone PMS 400 C actually mean?

Ordering paint matched to Pantone PMS 400 C means you are requesting a color that visually matches the standardized Pantone PMS 400 C target. Pantone PMS codes define color standards for consistent brand presentation, but they do not specify coating formulas, materials, or finishes. Always confirm the finish and format you need for your application, as color appearance can shift depending on substrate and gloss level.

How can I accurately compare samples of PMS 400 C for approval before installation?

When evaluating PMS 400 C samples for approval, compare all samples under the same type of lighting and on the same substrate you will use in the final application. Let all coatings fully dry and cure before making a judgment, since color and sheen can shift during the drying process. Inspect side by side with an official Pantone reference if possible. This helps ensure that your final display or branded element aligns with Pantone PMS 400 C as seen in real-world conditions.

What surface preparation steps should I follow before applying PMS 400 C matched paint?

Before applying PMS 400 C matched paint, clean the surface thoroughly to remove dust, oils, and debris. If needed, degrease with an appropriate cleaner. Lightly scuff glossy surfaces to promote adhesion, and ensure the area is dry and free from loose particles. Test paint a small area when possible to check for color and adhesion before proceeding with the full application.

Do I need a special undercoat or extra coats when using PMS 400 C paint?

PMS 400 C is a light, neutral gray and usually provides decent coverage, but the final hiding power depends on the substrate and product type. For best results, apply PMS 400 C over a light gray or white primer to ensure uniform color. Multiple coats may be needed over dark or uneven surfaces to achieve consistent coverage and the correct visual effect.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 400 C?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 400 C depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. We do our best to make sure you get your paint on time. Learn more about paint lead times at MyPerfectColor.
Can I use the Pantone PMS 400 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

The need for primer for Pantone PMS 400 C depends on the type of paint, the substrate being painted and where it will be located. See our Primer Selection Table to see what primer you might need and learn more about when you might need a primer. Most people don't use a primer for a touch up paint application, but a primer may improve adhesion and is typically recommended for exterior applications.
How do I convert PMS 400 C to a different color from another paint company?

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 400 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
