PMS 3165 C is a Pantone Matching System color from the Pantone PMS collection, designed for professional color specification and brand consistency. The color conveys a technical, bold, and modern vibe. It appears dark and assertive, with a strong presence suitable for marketing, display fabrication, and industrial design settings.

PMS 3165 C presents as a very dark green, with a low LRV of 5.46, indicating limited reflectance and high visual weight.

The color exhibits a distinctly cool undertone, achieved through its blue-leaning green hue.

This color demonstrates moderate to strong chroma, giving it a saturated and vivid appearance compared to typical dark colors.

The undertone is strongly blue, resulting in a teal or blue-forest green impression.

The color is sensitive to finish selection—gloss and matte finishes may significantly affect its perceived depth and richness.

Lighting will influence the visibility of the blue undertone; cool, bright lighting may accentuate this characteristic.

PMS 3165 C works well when a dramatic, cool-toned dark green is desired for branding or environments requiring strong visual identity. Care should be taken with lighting and finish, as improper choices may cause the color to appear almost black or obscure its blue undertone. Application on smooth, prepared surfaces in controlled lighting environments will best maintain the intended appearance. Compared to similar dark greens, PMS 3165 C appears cooler and more saturated, standing out more in compositions where a standard dark green might seem flat.

Similar colors:

  • PMS 316 C – Slightly darker and closer to black, with similar cool undertones.
  • PMS 3155 C – Lighter and bluer, offering a more turquoise or teal appearance.
  • PMS 3308 C – Darker and less saturated, appearing closer to a classic forest green with less pronounced blue tones.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 3165 C

How can I be sure I am ordering the correct version of Pantone PMS 3165 C for my project?

It is essential to confirm that PMS 3165 C is the exact reference required for your brand or display application. Pantone codes often include suffixes or are part of specific series, and minor differences can matter in professional contexts. Check your brand standards or project documentation to verify the correct Pantone code, including any suffix such as C (coated), U (uncoated), or other variations, before placing your order. This helps ensure you get the intended color match for maximum brand consistency.

What surface preparation steps are recommended before applying Pantone PMS 3165 C paint?

Proper surface preparation helps achieve the best results with PMS 3165 C. Begin by cleaning the surface to remove dust, oil, and grease, using a suitable cleaner. Lightly scuff glossy or smooth surfaces with a fine abrasive to promote adhesion, then wipe away residue. For best results, test the paint on a small, inconspicuous area first to confirm adhesion and appearance. Effective preparation supports uniform coverage and the intended rich appearance of PMS 3165 C.

How does the finish or sheen affect the perceived color of Pantone PMS 3165 C?

The finish selected for PMS 3165 C can significantly influence how the color appears. Glossy finishes tend to make the color look deeper and more saturated, while matte finishes can make PMS 3165 C appear slightly lighter and less intense. Comparing a matte and a gloss version side by side may reveal noticeable differences, even with the same color code. For visual consistency, match the original finish specified in your brand documentation whenever possible.

What are some tips for maintaining a uniform appearance when applying Pantone PMS 3165 C over large areas?

For best uniformity with PMS 3165 C on large surfaces, use consistent application techniques such as spraying in even, overlapping passes or rolling in the same direction. Plan your work so each section is completed without long breaks to avoid visible lines or patchiness. Because PMS 3165 C is dark and saturated, additional coats may be required for full coverage and even color. Always check coverage under project lighting conditions to verify a uniform, brand-consistent appearance.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 3165 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
