PMS 284 C is a Pantone Matching System standard color, recognized across branding, identity, and industrial design sectors. As a collection standard, it exhibits a light to mid-light blue with a clear, cool quality. The hue presents as fresh and approachable, with a straightforward, technical, and consistent appearance. The color is often perceived as clean and stable, contributing to an inviting yet professional visual identity.

PMS 284 C appears as a light to mid-light blue (LRV 36.63). The color leans distinctly cool in temperature. The saturation is moderate, maintaining clarity without excessive vibrancy. The undertone remains clean and true blue, without pronounced green, violet, or gray shifts. The color’s consistency supports reliable appearance under a range of finishes, though increased sheen may affect perceived brightness.

PMS 284 C is often used in large-format signage and event display elements where friendly brand visibility is important. The color is commonly referenced in academic institution branding for backgrounds and support graphics. This color is frequently specified for marketing materials and prototype elements requiring a recognizably light blue that avoids strong pastel or sky-like associations.

PMS 284 C is well-suited for projects where a stable, light blue is required for branding or wayfinding continuity, and where clarity is valued over conspicuousness. It performs consistently in both matte and gloss finishes, though higher sheen may amplify brightness. When matching to Pantone standards, compare both painted samples and a physical PMS swatch in the intended lighting. Compared to similar colors, PMS 284 C avoids muted or grayish tendencies while remaining distinctly lighter and less saturated than stronger blue PMS references.

Similar colors:
PMS 278 C, which is lighter and slightly less saturated, presenting a softer blue appearance.

PMS 292 C, which is deeper and more saturated, providing a stronger and more vivid blue.

PMS 543 C, which is cooler and more muted, resulting in a slightly grayer and subtler look.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 284 C

How does the finish or sheen affect the appearance of PMS 284 C paint in branding or display applications?

The finish or sheen you select for PMS 284 C paint directly influences its perceived color and impact. A gloss finish will amplify brightness and may make PMS 284 C appear lighter or more vivid, while a matte or satin finish tends to present the color as softer or slightly muted. For projects requiring precise brand alignment, always compare painted samples against a physical PMS 284 C swatch in your intended lighting and finish before finalizing your order. Differences in finish can affect how audiences perceive your brand color, especially in large-format displays or lit environments.

What are the steps to order paint matched to Pantone PMS 284 C on MyPerfectColor?

To order paint matched to Pantone PMS 284 C, start by selecting the format you need, such as spray paint or other available options. Can I use the Pantone PMS 284 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
