PMS 220 C is a Pantone Matching System (PMS) color recognized for its vivid, impactful magenta appearance and frequent use in branding, signage, and marketing environments. The color presents as bold, energetic, and contemporary with a distinctly cool undertone. Its low Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of 9.54 indicates a deep, dark appearance that commands attention on diverse substrates. PMS 220 C is widely selected where a memorable, eye-catching magenta is needed in professional brand and display settings.

- PMS 220 C exhibits a dark tone, consistent with its low LRV. - The color presents a cool magenta hue with a noticeable blue-violet undertone. - Saturation is high, resulting in pronounced vibrancy and strong color presence. - PMS 220 C may display some finish sensitivity, with gloss finishes intensifying its visual vibrancy and matts slightly muting its depth. - This color is resistant to appearing washed out but may shift subtly under different lighting conditions.

PMS 220 C provides strong visual impact in environments where brand recall and impactful presentation are priorities. It performs well in direct lighting and as a dominant color on large surfaces. Deep, saturated colors like PMS 220 C may require multiple coats, especially over light bases, to achieve uniform opacity. When specifying this color, it is important to evaluate samples under intended lighting and finish. Compared to similar dark magentas, PMS 220 C reads cooler and more saturated, minimizing brown or muted undertones that can appear in less chromatic options.

Similar colors:
PMS 219 C – A lighter and less saturated magenta; appears visibly brighter and more energetic.

PMS 221 C – Slightly darker with a deeper blue undertone, lending a richer and cooler appearance.

PMS 222 C – Much darker and more muted, trending toward a deep, subdued violet with less chromatic intensity.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 220 C

What factors should I consider before using Pantone PMS 220 C in a retail or pop-up environment?

When specifying PMS 220 C for retail or pop-up installations, evaluate how the color will appear under your actual lighting, as vivid magentas like this can shift with lighting type and intensity. This color has a low Light Reflectance Value (LRV 9.54), meaning it will look quite deep and bold on most surfaces but can appear different in matte versus gloss finishes. For high-traffic or high-visibility areas, sample the color on your intended substrate in the selected finish to confirm appearance and expectation. Deep, saturated colors may need multiple coats for full coverage, so factor this into your project planning for brand consistency.

Can I use a Pantone PMS 220 C paint match for touch-up work on existing installations?

Pantone PMS 220 C matches are intended for brand-facing displays, signage, and new fabrications, not for touch-up on pre-painted parts. If precise touch-up results are needed to blend with an existing coated part, it is best to send a physical part to MyPerfectColor for a custom match. This approach accounts for variables like substrate, coating process, and finish, which cannot be captured by the Pantone code alone.

Can I convert Pantone PMS 220 C directly to another paint brand's color?

Pantone PMS 220 C is a unique color standard. Most paint brands create their own palettes, and direct cross-references are rarely exact. This is especially important for saturated colors like PMS 220 C, where even small differences in formulation or finish can change how the color appears in brand settings. Use Pantone PMS 220 C paint when the goal is to match a specified brand color, rather than relying on conversions to other brands.

To select the best paint for PMS 220 C, contact MyPerfectColor with information about your substrate, application environment, and preferred finish. This allows recommendations that ensure optimal adhesion, durability, and brand-consistent visual results for your specific project needs.

Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. Can I use the Pantone PMS 220 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

Most people don't use a primer for a touch up paint application, but a primer may improve adhesion and is typically recommended for exterior applications.
How do I convert PMS 220 C to a different color from another paint company?

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 220 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information.
