PMS 173 C, from the Pantone PMS collection, is a visually assertive, vivid, and deeply saturated orange-red. It carries a bold, energetic, and dynamic vibe, making it a strategic choice for applications demanding attention and consistent color communication across varied materials and formats.

PMS 173 C appears dark for an orange-red, with noticeably low light reflectance (LRV 19.27). The color exhibits warm visual temperature, leaning more toward orange with robust red influence. PMS 173 C has high saturation with strong chromaticity, making it visibly rich and prominent. The undertone is grounded in orange, supporting a vivid and warm profile, with a perceptible red base that prevents it from reading as pastel. The color’s perceived vividness and depth can be affected by finish (matte vs. glossy), with glossy finishes amplifying saturation.

PMS 173 C is frequently specified in signage, branding, and display fabrication requiring assertive visual presence. The color is often used in environments where brand distinction and visibility are operationally critical.

PMS 173 C works well where a strong, warm presence is desired—especially for marketing and brand environments where color uniformity across substrates is needed. The intensity of this orange-red means surface preparation is important to prevent uneven coverage, as saturated colors may require more coats for opacity. Lighting will noticeably influence the appearance; under cool or dim lighting, the warmth and depth may be subdued. When compared to similar colors, PMS 173 C stands out for its heightened chroma and deeper value, providing more visual weight and richness without veering into true red or muted orange territory.

This Pantone PMS color is defined by the Pantone Matching System standard. Evaluate the color using a physical Pantone reference and a real paint sample in the intended lighting and finish. Paint appearance varies by finish and lighting.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 173 C

How does surface texture affect the appearance of Pantone PMS 173 C paint?

Surface texture can significantly change how Pantone PMS 173 C is perceived in real-world applications. Rough or uneven textures scatter light and create shadowing, which may make PMS 173 C appear darker and less saturated. On glossy, smooth surfaces, the color may look more vivid and consistent due to even reflectivity. When brand consistency and color accuracy are essential, test PMS 173 C on your actual substrate to see how surface texture influences its appearance.

How does the finish or sheen impact Pantone PMS 173 C paint in brand-facing displays?

The finish selected for Pantone PMS 173 C will noticeably affect its visual impact in brand and marketing applications. A glossy finish increases perceived saturation and brightness, making the orange-red look more intense and lively. Matte finishes reduce reflections and can mute the color, resulting in a softer or slightly darker appearance. Satin falls between these effects. Always evaluate PMS 173 C in your intended finish and lighting environment to confirm it aligns with brand expectations.

What preparation steps are recommended for best results when applying Pantone PMS 173 C paint?

Proper surface preparation is essential for achieving uniform, brand-consistent results with PMS 173 C. Start by cleaning and degreasing all surfaces to remove contaminants. Lightly scuff or abrade glossy or smooth substrates to promote adhesion if appropriate. Be sure to remove dust or residue before coating. For saturated colors like PMS 173 C, uneven or improperly prepped surfaces may lead to streaking or poor coverage. Always test a small area to confirm adhesion and color appearance prior to full production.

When is it recommended to sample Pantone PMS 173 C before a full rollout?

Sampling Pantone PMS 173 C is strongly advised for high-visibility brand environments, large installations, or projects involving diverse substrates. Lighting conditions and material properties can noticeably impact how PMS 173 C looks in the final application. Sampling allows you to confirm that the color performs as expected in your real-world conditions and meets brand criteria before making larger commitments.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 173 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
