PMS 161 C is a standardized color from the Pantone PMS collection. Visually, it communicates a grounded, professional, and subdued vibe with undertones that lean earthy and serious. This color’s low reflectance and muted character support uses where visual gravity and reliability are emphasized.

PMS 161 C has a very dark appearance, with a low LRV of 5.09. The color presents as warm-toned, with moderate yellow-red undertones contributing to its earthy character. PMS 161 C exhibits moderate chroma, registering as subdued rather than vivid or saturated. Undertones are primarily brown with a notable muted orange-cast, producing a sense of seriousness. This color may be particularly sensitive to finish; glossier sheens can make it appear slightly richer, while matte finishes reinforce its muted quality. PMS 161 C’s depth can result in low visibility under dim lighting, making finish selection and lighting important for readability.

PMS 161 C is effective in applications that require a strong, understated, and stable background or accent, such as paneling, signage, or display elements that need to distinguish brand identity without overt brightness. Evaluate this color in its final lighting environment; it may appear even darker in low light and glossier finishes will enhance any residual warmth. For projects seeking subtle differentiation from near-black or true chocolate browns, PMS 161 C offers a nuanced, slightly muted presence that avoids harshness.

Similar colors:
PMS 154 C is lighter and warmer, shifting more towards an amber or orange-brown appearance.

PMS 4625 C is similar in darkness but has a cooler, more neutral brown undertone compared to the muted orange-brown of PMS 161 C.

PMS 168 C is darker and more saturated, reading closer to a dense reddish-brown than the more muted PMS 161 C.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 161 C

How does changing the finish affect how PMS 161 C looks in my project?

The finish or sheen you choose for PMS 161 C can noticeably affect its appearance. Matte finishes will make PMS 161 C appear more muted and subdued, while glossier finishes may make the color look richer and slightly lighter. This means a sample sprayed in matte will look different from the same color in gloss, even if both match the official PMS 161 C target. Consider your project's visual goals and review samples in your selected finish before finalizing a brand standard or production run.

Where can I find the Safety Data Sheet for paint made in Pantone PMS 161 C?

The Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for paint made in Pantone PMS 161 C depends on the specific product type, such as spray paint, paint pens, or brush-in-cap bottles. The SDS is determined by the paint's formulation, not the color code itself. To find the correct SDS, look up the SDS library on the MyPerfectColor site for your chosen paint product. If you need further help, contact support for assistance in locating the right documentation.

Can I use Pantone PMS 161 C paint for touch-up if my part was not originally painted to a Pantone standard?

Pantone PMS 161 C is best used for brand color reproduction where the PMS code is the visual target. If you need touch-up quality matching to an existing part that was not originally painted with PMS 161 C or you are unsure of the exact finish, the most reliable path is to send a physical sample of your part for custom color matching. Matching by PMS code is not intended for touch-up or repair on unknown or previous coatings, as visual alignment across different substrates or factories is not guaranteed.

Are there well-known brands or institutions that use PMS 161 C?

Specific brand associations for PMS 161 C are not officially cataloged here. However, PMS 161 C is often selected for projects requiring a grounded, serious brand presence. If you are specifying a color for extended branding or institutional use, always verify usage with your brand or project lead to ensure PMS 161 C aligns with required standards or precedent.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 161 C?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 161 C depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. Can I use the Pantone PMS 161 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
