Dry to touch, recoat time, and full handling readiness are different stages, so do not treat them as the same thing. If you need to assemble or install the part soon after painting, allow extra time before heavy handling.

Yes, but prep matters. Clean the surface first, remove dirt, oil, chalk, and other contamination, and scuff glossy sound coatings so the new paint can bond. If you see rust, corrosion, or loose old paint, deal with that before coating. The final look can change based on the old coating's gloss, texture, and condition, so a test spray on the actual metal or previously coated part is a good idea for items like vents, rails, brackets, hardware, and other removable parts.

Coverage depends on surface size, texture, hiding power, application method, and how many coats you need. A typical can of spray paint covers about 20 square feet with one coat. Other paint formats typically cover between 400 and 600 square feet per coat. For small projects like PVC pipe, vents, grilles, fixtures, brackets, or similar parts, add up the total surface area and allow extra if the substrate is rough or if the original color may show through.
