A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 20140 reads as a muted, medium-dark brown with a warm yellow-red cast. It is fairly low in lightness and restrained in chroma, so the color looks earthy and subdued rather than bright or strongly saturated.
MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint to this government color reference can be used for specification-driven spray work on brackets, enclosures, control boxes, housings, rails, hardware, fabricated panels, carts, and other maintenance parts. It also suits mock-ups, training pieces, restored components, and color-coded accessories where separate parts need to stay aligned to the same Fed Std 595C target.
Because this is a darker, moderately subdued color, substrate and finish have a noticeable effect on how it reads after application. Gloss level, texture, film build, and the starting color of the part can shift the apparent depth and warmth, and touch-up beside older or weathered coatings may still show some difference even when the reference match is correct. On darker or uneven substrates, additional coats may be needed for even coverage.
Fed Std 595C identifies the color reference, not the coating chemistry, sheen, or approval status. For acceptance-critical work, compare the match to the project requirement and the existing surface condition, since an aged in-service part can look different from the standard reference chip.

About US Government Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 Colors. Fed-Std-595C / FED STD 595 Colors
The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
Frequently Asked Questions About Match of US Government™ Fed Std 595C 20140 *
Does Fed Std 595C 20140 define the full coating system, or just the color target?
A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 20140 is a color reference target, not a complete coating specification. It tells you the color to match, but it does not by itself choose the paint chemistry, gloss, surface prep, corrosion protection, or approval status for the job.
When you order from MyPerfectColor, you are buying paint matched to Fed Std 595C 20140. If your project also has requirements for primer, topcoat system, sheen, or formal acceptance, those need to be confirmed separately.
If I am touching up an older part with Fed Std 595C 20140, will the new paint always blend with the existing finish?
Not always. Even if Fed Std 595C 20140 is the correct standard, an older coating can have fade, weathering, sheen change, texture differences, or contamination that makes a fresh repair look different beside the surrounding area.
If the repair is highly visible or acceptance is critical, a match to the existing part or a sample panel may be a better choice than relying on the standard code alone. For a full-part repaint, matching the standard reference is usually more straightforward than trying to blend into aged paint.
What product formats can I order for Fed Std 595C 20140?
A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 20140 can be ordered as MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint in spray paint and other formats where offered for the project, such as touch-up paint or paint pens. The color code is the reference target, while the format should be chosen based on the part, substrate, and application method.
If you need small-area repair, choose a format that fits the repair size and access. If you are coating a larger fabricated part, choose the format that matches your workflow and surface area.
How should I prepare metal or an existing coating before applying Fed Std 595C 20140?
For Fed Std 595C 20140, start with a clean, sound surface. Remove dirt, oil, wax, and other contaminants, then scuff glossy or intact existing coatings so the new paint can bond properly. Bare metal and corrosion-prone areas usually need a primer that is appropriate for the substrate and the coating system.
If you are painting over an existing finish, make sure it is firmly attached and not peeling or chalking. Test on the actual substrate before committing to a larger area, especially when the part is made from mixed materials or has an unknown prior coating.
How long does Fed Std 595C 20140 take to dry, recoat, and handle?
Dry time for Fed Std 595C 20140 depends on the product format you order, plus film thickness, temperature, humidity, and the surface you are coating. Dry to touch, recoat time, and full cure are different milestones, so do not treat them as the same thing.
Plan your work using the instructions for the specific MyPerfectColor product you buy. If you need to assemble, package, or put the part back in service quickly, make sure the full cure time fits the project schedule before you start.
