Your room has a lot of potential. For now this is a simple on line consult, since I have no photographs.

Option #1

Keep the accent wall the Pennywise color, but do a gold sponging effect to it. This will be your main accent wall. Be light in using the gold not too bold. Make sure it is balanced. Don't want a gold wall. Goal to have Penny wise peek through meaning add a texture.

Then remaining walls go lighter on the same value scale of your color. Here are the two options to consider for the remaining walls.

Keep accent wall Pennywise and paint other four walls a lighter color on the value scale. Colors are above.

As for your curtains stay within the blue family. Since blue is a complementary color. Blue should balance out the warmth your walls.

Remember sample all color prior to commitment due to lighting conditions and other environmental factors. Test your sponging on a poster board to get the right touch, several times should suffice to get an even coated effect. From there proceed to your walls.

thank you so much Maria Anna. I do have some pictures and will add the images later. Part of the problem (I think) may be that we have an open floor plan and the walls open up to a very warm (Friendly Yellow) kitchen. I love the kitchen and hope to keep it warm. I should have also mentioned that we originally had the other walls painted Chrysanthemum. This is a north facing room and for some reason the walls were very orangey in the early morning and evening (probably due to light). Do you think maybe sponging Chrysanthemum on the other walls would lighten it? We truly like the Pennywise on the accent wall as we have a brick fireplace and an oak mantle. Thanks again! Your aforementioned comments have really given me some hope!

Wow you have a lot to work with. For now lets keep it simple until when you decide to upload photographs.

As for your question about sponging Chrysanthemum on Pennywise should work well since it is on the lower side on the same value scale. My concern is how the sponge technique is done. Glazes are used in conjunction with your color. However you can always use a glaze that matches your color Chrysanthemum, or something similar to it. Paint on paint without the use of glaze will appear flat and not have dimension, which will distract from your focal point. Glaze smooths everything out, a smooth transition from color to color. Smooth transitions will make it look better. But however with the issue of lighting it maybe a factor in this room, please note sample color during different times of the day in the room with your accent wall. Suggestion get a poster board paint and practice sponging and make note of times of day how the lighting effects color. Is it pleasing with Pennywise?

So -- despite every camera in our house with a flash -- being broke I was able to finally get some photos! I am wondering if I should just paint the walls (except for the accent wall) one more time (my husband is going to kill me!). I looked at the color sheet and there is a white color on the end of the sheet. Do you think this would blend well? Thank you so much. I want to love my room and feel like I keep making it worse. Originally the room was painted a beige but the fireplace just melted into the wall. Our floors are hickory and have a lot of orange shades. That along with the brick looked promising with the Pennywise but I think I have overdone it!

I have not found any photographs in the system. Change out the Pennywise to another color, goal try to pull out a shade from the brick and paint the wall. Use this color for the accent wall. Don't use the darkest shade on the value scale, use a shade four down from original color. A color that is not dominate in the brick because the brick will blend into the wall, but a color that is slightly there an undertone don't pull out any oranges from the brick. This concept also applies to kitchens in pulling out the grain in cabinets or granite counter tops. Select the accent wall color, from there decide on a color for the entire room perhaps a tint one down from the value scale. Or another coordinating color.

So hopefully this will resolve the issue. Try uploading your photographs again, If you can't let me know, and I will see what I can do.

The colors recommended are greens. Red and greens are both complementary colors on the color wheel and is the best combination for the red. However I see your ceiling is a purple color you can always paint it white.

For the fire place accent wall it is recommended to use the below color.

A tint lighter so there can be a smooth transition to the yellow in your kitchen.
So with the accent wall will have more emphasis since the fire place is the focal point.

As for your kitchen island paint it a neutral color to add clarity and definition to your space instead of having the same color all around. It is about defining your space.

Thank you -- I am going to get some samples and try it. Our ceilings are actually white but the lighting on the camera probably affect how it looks.

One last question -- our study joins the family room on the other side (left side of the fireplace). It is painted sage green -- accent and lighter for the walls. The accent wall is the same wall as the fireplace just separated by a doorway. I am concerned that there may be too much green or it may appear as if I meant to paint it the same color and didn't. Do you think something in the brown or beige would be good? Our room was originally a very light tan but the wall didn't pop. If I am getting samples, I thought I would check about brown.

One last thought -- is there any color that you can think of that would allow me to keep the accent wall pennywise or do you think it is too dark? I really wish there was a shade of brown or beige that would blend in well with it and still blend in well with the kitchen yellow. I am afraid my husband may be getting tired of repainting (all other walls were chrysanthemum). thanks

I have three options for you to consider. You can paint all of these colors on poster boards. You can always rotate colors through out the room to see which one you prefer for the accent wall and remaining walls. Any of these colors should work well in any combination it is a matter of preference.

Below are some options to consider.

Option #1

For the accent wall, Sumptuous Peach Sherwin Williams, this color is in the Pennywise family, but very toned down. Pennywise is too dark. Along with the remaining walls a neutral Putnam Ivory is recommended, since a neutral should go well with your sage walls.

Thanks Maria Anna -- I ordered a few samples today and will get started. I want to be able to wipe the walls without the paint coming off (handprints, etc.) Is semi-gloss or eggshell typically used?

Use a satin finish or pearl, semi gloss may be too glossy. Eggshell a little on the flat side considering you may need to wipe the walls. The satin finish has a slight gloss, it is one sheen below semigloss. but not too obvious it should suffice.
