RAL 9004 Signal Black Paint

RAL 9004 Signal Black is a standardized color target, not a specific coating process. Powder and liquid coatings marked "RAL 9004" can differ in gloss, texture, and exact visual appearance based on resin chemistry, cure, and supplier formulation.

To avoid rework or rejection:

• If the requirement is "match the RAL standard": order a RAL 9004 color match and specify your required gloss (e.g., matte/satin/semi-gloss/gloss). Small variations from your part's finish may be acceptable.
• If the requirement is "match the existing part/OEM powder": provide the powder manufacturer and code, or send a physical sample for custom matching. This is the safer path for high-visibility or tightly inspected work.
• Always confirm gloss target (gloss units at 60 degrees if available) and any texture (smooth vs fine/rough texture). Differences here are the most common reason for non-acceptance.

Without an OEM reference or sample, an exact match to a specific powder-coated part cannot be guaranteed.

Sheen is often the deciding factor for acceptance on dark colors like RAL 9004 Signal Black. The RAL code defines color, not gloss. Different gloss levels (matte vs gloss) can make the same color appear lighter/darker or more/less reflective, leading to rejections even when the color is correct.

To control sheen risk:

• Confirm the gloss target (preferably in gloss units at 60 degrees) from the drawing, OEM spec, or by measuring a good part.
• Match texture: a smooth liquid touch-up on a textured powder surface will look different even at the same gloss.
• For inspection-critical or large areas, specify gloss within a tight tolerance (e.g., ±5 GU) and consider a sample-based approval.
• For small functional touch-ups or cross-material coordination where sheen already varies, a standard RAL 9004 in a practical gloss may be sufficient.

Send a sample when exact visual alignment to an existing part matters. Choose custom matching if any of the following apply:

• High-visibility cosmetic surfaces or large-area repaints adjacent to existing parts.
• Strict acceptance or inspection criteria where gloss/texture differences will fail.
• You need to match a specific OEM powder coat or an aged/field-exposed part.

Sample guidelines:

• Provide a clean, representative piece (flat area ~50 mm x 50 mm or larger). Note the desired gloss and texture.
• If you have the OEM powder brand/code, include it; it can speed and improve the match.
• Expect additional lead time for matching and optional approval panels. This reduces the risk of field rejection.

For general touch-up or non-critical coordination, a standard RAL 9004 match with an appropriate sheen is typically sufficient.
