RAL 9001 Cream Paint

Use the RAL 9001 Cream standard when the acceptance reference is the RAL standard itself and exact replication of an existing coating is not required. Choose a custom or OEM match when acceptance is against an existing part or strict visual tolerances apply.

• Standard RAL 9001 is typically sufficient for: cross-material coordination where gloss/texture already differ; touch-up of small chips where functional protection is the priority; non-critical visibility areas; projects where the QC reference is the RAL Classic standard card.
• Request an OEM/powder-code or sample match for: high-visibility surfaces; large-area repaints; formal inspection criteria (e.g., Delta E limits); cases where the spec references a specific powder brand/code; replacements that must visually match installed parts.

Key risks to manage:

• RAL is a color target, not a process. Powder and liquid can match color but differ in gloss and texture. If gloss/texture matter, specify them (e.g., 60 degrees gloss range, texture level) and define the acceptance reference (RAL card vs existing part).
• If acceptance is against an existing part, use a retained sample or OEM powder code; ordering "RAL 9001" alone may be rejected even if it matches the RAL standard.

PO language suggestion: "Color: RAL 9001 Cream. Acceptance against [RAL Classic standard / customer-supplied sample / OEM powder code _____]. Gloss: ____ GU at 60 degrees (±____). Texture: ____."

RAL 9001 Cream is a light off-white; hiding over dark or high-contrast substrates often requires a primer plus multiple finish coats.

• System planning: primer + 2 finish coats for most substrates; add an extra finish coat if covering dark colors or sharp contrasts.
• Primer choice: use a light/neutral gray or off-white primer to improve hide and reduce finish coats.
• Liquid products: theoretical coverage is commonly ~350-450 sq ft/gal at ~1 mil DFT; plan ~250-350 sq ft/gal in practice after losses and geometry.
• Aerosols: for small repairs, a 12 oz can typically yields ~20sq ft of finished area at two light coats; plan conservatively for complex parts.
• Verify required dry film thickness (DFT) and recoat windows on the product TDS; do a quick drawdown over black/white to confirm hiding before committing to production.

1. Identify substrate and existing coating if possible (steel, aluminum, galvanized, plastic; powder or liquid). Match primer accordingly.
2. Clean: remove oils/dirt with detergent or alkaline cleaner; rinse and dry. Follow with a solvent wipe (lint-free cloth, two-rag method).
3. De-rust and feather: remove corrosion to bright metal; feather paint edges. Sand/scuff the repair and surrounding blend area (e.g., P320-P600 or non-woven pad) to promote adhesion.
4. Prime bare areas: use appropriate primers (e.g., epoxy or zinc phosphate for steel/aluminum, suitable pretreatment for galvanized, adhesion promoter for plastics). Allow proper cure/flash per TDS.
5. Mask and control conditions: mask edges, ensure substrate temp within the coating's specified range, control humidity/condensation.
6. Apply light, even coats: build color gradually, extending slightly beyond the repair to blend. Respect flash times and recoat windows.
7. Cure fully before evaluation: allow the recommended cure for color and gloss to stabilize. If needed, lightly denib or knock down sheen after cure to blend.
8. Verify: perform a small test area first to confirm adhesion and color acceptability against the acceptance reference (RAL card vs existing part).

• Lot traceability: supplier, product name/code, batch/lot numbers, manufacture/expiry dates.
• Samples: retain a sprayed drawdown or witness panel signed at acceptance; attach photos only as supplemental (not primary) acceptance.
• Inspection plan: measurement methods (e.g., glossmeter angle, DFT gauge), inspection points, and rework criteria.
