RAL7004 Signal Grey is a medium-light, low-chroma neutral grey from the RAL Classic collection. Designed for functional, coordinated industrial and maintenance settings, it offers a neutral, technical, balanced, and understated appearance with non-reflective qualities. This color features moderate lightness (L = 63.78; LRV = 32.53), very slight coolness (b = -0.32, hue angle = 275 degrees), and low chroma (chroma = 0.32), resulting in a true grey with almost no hue bias. Matte and gloss finishes of RAL7004 remain visually close; however, gloss can introduce temporary highlights under direct lighting.

RAL7004 Signal Grey is frequently used for machinery housings, equipment enclosures, maintenance touch-ups on finished metal or plastic, architectural metalwork in public or commercial spaces, cross-material color matching, and industrial maintenance painting for harmonization. Its reliably neutral presence minimizes visual distraction and is effective when coordination across surface types is necessary. The moderate lightness provides effective contrast against dark backgrounds without harshness or glare, and low chroma ensures minor sheen and texture differences typically do not impact appearance significantly, though physical samples are recommended when precise color matching is necessary for large or highly visible surfaces.

Insights
- LRV of 32.53 and RGB values near the midpoint (154, 154, 155) together indicate a moderate brightness suitable for industrial environments without glare.
- LAB values (L = 63.8, a = 0.0, b = -0.3) reaffirm near-zero chroma and a virtually neutral undertone.
- Hue angle (275 degrees) places this color firmly on the cool end of the neutral spectrum but so close to zero chroma that color cast is negligible.

Paint appearance varies by finish and lighting.

Frequently Asked Questions About RAL 7004 Signal Grey Paint

When is standard RAL 7004 Signal Grey acceptable vs when should we request a custom match to our part?

RAL 7004 Signal Grey is a color target, not a coating process. Choose the approach that aligns with your acceptance criteria.

  • Use standard RAL 7004 when: (1) the spec or drawing only calls out "RAL 7004," (2) cross-material coordination is needed and textures/sheens already differ, (3) the work is low-criticality (small chips, functional touch-up), or (4) close visual harmony is sufficient. Expect minor differences in hue/appearance between powder and liquid, and across gloss levels/texture.
  • Request a custom or OEM match when: (1) parts sit side-by-side with existing coated components, (2) the surface is high-visibility or large-area, (3) inspection is strict (formal pass/fail), or (4) you have a known OEM powder code or a physical sample to match. This reduces risk from powder vs liquid sheen/texture differences.

To control acceptance risk, specify: target (RAL standard vs your sample), gloss (e.g., 30±5 GU @60 degrees), texture/smoothness, inspection lighting, and color tolerance (e.g., visual match to approved control panel). Provide or request a retained control sample if critical.

Can we apply RAL 7004 Signal Grey paint over existing powder-coated parts?

Yes, with correct surface prep and product selection. The goal is to ensure adhesion and manage appearance differences.

  • Assess the surface: Only coat intact, clean, and sound powder. If chalked or glossy, plan to degloss.
  • Prep: Clean with detergent, rinse, dry. Scuff-sand to dull the surface (e.g., 320-400 grit on smooth powder). Feather any chips to solid edges. Remove corrosion and spot-prime bare metal.
  • Primer: If substrate is exposed or the existing powder's chemistry is unknown, use a compatible adhesion-promoting or epoxy primer.
  • Adhesion check: Do a small masked test area before full production. Verify adhesion and appearance after full cure.
  • Appearance expectations: Liquid touch-up over textured powder may look different even when the color is RAL 7004. If a seamless cosmetic blend is required, supply a part for a custom match with the desired gloss/texture.
What coverage should we expect for RAL 7004 Signal Grey?

Coverage depends on product type, application, and substrate contrast. As a mid-gray, RAL 7004 typically hides efficiently.

  • Typical theoretical range: ~300-400 sq ft/gal at 1 mil DFT (varies with solids). Plan practical coverage lower due to application losses and profile.
  • Coats: Over similar gray primer, 1-2 coats often achieve hide. Over high-contrast surfaces (white/black) expect 2-3 coats or use a gray-tinted primer close to RAL 7004 to reduce coats.
  • Aerosol reference: A 12 oz can yields roughly 10-15 sq ft per full coat; small chip repairs use far less.
  • Verification: Confirm on a test panel with your equipment, film build target, and primer to lock in actual spread rate before production.
What should we include on the PO to ensure repeatable QC for RAL 7004 Signal Grey?
  • Color target: RAL 7004 Signal Grey (RAL Classic). State if matching the standard or a submitted sample/OEM powder code.
  • Finish parameters: Gloss level (e.g., 30±5 GU @60 degrees), texture/smoothness, and any special effects.
  • Coating details: Product chemistry (e.g., epoxy, polyurethane), solventborne/waterborne, application method (spray, etc.), and cure schedule.
  • System context: Substrate, pretreatment, primer, and target DFT for each layer.
  • Inspection criteria: Visual match under specified light (e.g., D65), tolerance to target (define pass/fail), and whether a retained control panel is required.
  • Traceability: Record lot/batch numbers and request a labeled retain or drawdown panel with shipment.

Avoid using photos as acceptance references; use the RAL standard or your approved control sample instead.
