• You must visually match a current coated part (powder coat, plastic, anodized, etc.).
• High-visibility surfaces, strict inspection, or large-area repaints where small deltas will be rejected.
• A known OEM powder code/line exists (e.g., specific manufacturer/finish); include that info to tighten the match.
• Unknown or critical sheen/texture (e.g., matte/structured powder).
• The part is aged or weathered and must blend to its present appearance.

Ordering the standard RAL 5017 match is typically sufficient when:

• Cross-material coordination where textures/sheens already differ.
• Low-criticality touch-ups or functional protection.
• Acceptance is against the RAL Classic reference, not a specific part.

Sample guidance: send a clean, representative piece (flat area >= 1 in²), note required sheen (gloss/satin/matte), the intended substrate/application, and whether the target is the RAL standard or the existing part. A sample-based match aligns to your sample's appearance; if you need alignment to the fresh RAL chip instead, state that explicitly.

Not necessarily. RAL 5017 defines a color target, not a coating process. Powder and liquid coatings use different resins, film builds, gloss levels, and textures, which can create visible differences even when both reference the same RAL code.

Default approach: our liquid coatings are formulated to the RAL Classic 5017 standard. If your acceptance is against the existing powder-coated part, treat that part as the target:

• Provide the OEM powder product code and specified gloss/texture, or send a sample for custom match.
• Select the correct sheen (gloss/satin/matte) for the liquid coating to reduce perceived mismatch.
• Test a small panel on-site under your lighting before committing to production.

Decide acceptance up front: pass/fail against the RAL fan chip (standard match) or against the installed powder-coated part (sample/OEM match). We cannot guarantee an exact match to unknown or unspecified coatings.

• Paint pen: pinpoint chips, fine scratches, hardware heads and edges (typically <=2 mm). Fast, controlled application.
• Brush bottle: small chips/abrasions (~2-6 mm) and tight access areas. Better fill than a pen.
• Aerosol spray: scuffs or panels up to ~2 sq ft, or when blending is important. For larger areas, use quarts/gallons with spray equipment for best film build control.

Tips to reduce mismatch risk:

• Match sheen to the part (gloss/satin/matte). Texture differences on powder coats are hard to hide; spray usually blends better than pen/brush.
• Clean, degloss surrounding area, and prime any bare metal before touch-up.
• Apply light coats and evaluate under site lighting. Touch-ups may remain visible on textured or matte finishes; for high-visibility areas, consider a sample-based match and spray application.

Yes, our spray paint, paint pens and touch up bottles are ideal for touching up parts of all kinds, including powder coatings. However, keep in mind that our version of RAL5017 Traffic Blue is based on the color swatch contained in the official RAL color book. While we can provide RAL5017 Traffic Blue in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another brand.
