RAL 5012 Light Blue Paint

Use the standard RAL 5012 Light Blue reference when you only need the color target, not an exact finish match. Send a sample or OEM code when acceptance will compare against an existing part or finish.

• Standard RAL 5012 is sufficient when: cross-material coordination is expected (powder vs. liquid, different textures/sheens), repairs are small/low-visibility, or visual harmony is acceptable.
• Send a physical sample or OEM powder coating code when: parts are high-visibility or large-area, inspection is strict (side-by-side comparison), an existing powder-coated part must be matched for hue/texture/gloss, or a specific powder line/series/gloss is called out.

Important: A RAL code defines a color target, not a coating process. Liquid paint matched to the RAL standard can differ in sheen/texture from a powder-coated part and may appear different. To reduce acceptance risk, include with your PO: sample panel or part (preferred), any OEM powder manufacturer/series/code, target gloss and texture, substrate and application method, and inspection lighting (e.g., plant LEDs).

Appearance changes with lighting (metamerism) and finish. Different resins, pigments, and gloss levels can shift how RAL 5012 Light Blue is perceived, especially across powder vs. liquid coatings or different substrates.

• Define acceptance lighting: specify the typical inspection light (e.g., warm LED on the production floor) and view angle/distance on your PO.
• Approve a sample: request a spray-out/drawdown of RAL 5012 in the selected paint system and gloss, and review it under the project lighting before production.
• Avoid ambiguity: state whether you are matching the RAL 5012 standard or matching an existing part. If matching a part, provide the part or OEM powder code and desired gloss/texture.

Without a defined lighting/finish target, we will match the RAL 5012 color standard in the specified paint chemistry, but field appearance may vary under different lights.

Use standard RAL 5012 Light Blue touch-up for small chips, scratches, and functional protection. It restores color coverage but may not fully align with adjacent finish gloss/texture.

• Appropriate as a stopgap: minor, localized repairs; parts with existing wear; areas where close visual harmony is acceptable.
• Not recommended as the sole solution for: large panels, contiguous surfaces, or high-visibility areas next to pristine powder-coated parts. In these cases, request a custom match to the existing part (or provide OEM powder code) and approve a sample panel before proceeding.

This reduces the risk of visible hue or gloss differences that can be highlighted across larger areas.

Select primer by substrate and service environment; primer choice affects adhesion, corrosion resistance, and perceived color/gloss.

• Bare carbon steel: clean to bare metal and remove rust/contamination. Use a corrosion-inhibitive primer (e.g., epoxy or zinc-rich) compatible with your RAL 5012 topcoat.
• Galvanized steel: degrease and prepare to remove oils/passivation. Use a galvanized-appropriate primer (self-etching/wash primer or galvanized-compatible epoxy).
• Aluminum: clean and lightly abrade. Use an etch/wash primer or epoxy primer designed for aluminum.
• Plastics: confirm resin type; clean and scuff as appropriate. Use a plastic adhesion promoter/primer compatible with the substrate and topcoat.
• Previously painted: clean, degloss, and test a small area for lifting. If unknown coating, use a barrier coat (e.g., epoxy) before RAL 5012.

For best hide with this medium-light blue, use an appropriate primer shade (often gray) recommended for your system. Always follow the product technical data sheet for prep, film builds, and recoat windows.

However, keep in mind that our version of RAL5012 Light Blue is based on the color swatch contained in the official RAL color book.
