RAL 5002 Ultramarine Blue Paint

RAL 5002 defines a color target, not the coating process. Order a custom match (send a sample or provide the OEM powder code) when acceptance will be judged against your existing part or a specific powder, not just the RAL standard.

Send a sample or OEM reference when:

• You must match an existing coated assembly or field-installed part.
• High-visibility or continuous surfaces are involved (panels, cabinets, large equipment).
• Strict inspection criteria apply (side-by-side comparison, light-booth checks, signed color samples).
• You know the original OEM powder code, gloss level, or texture and need continuity.
• Existing parts have aged, faded, or were produced with different gloss/texture.

Standard RAL 5002 is usually sufficient for:

• Cross-material coordination where textures/sheens already differ (e.g., plastic trim to painted metal).
• Low-criticality touch-up (chips, edges) where functional protection is primary.

What to include with a sample:

• Flat area >= 2×2 inches, clean and representative.
• Any known gloss/texture data and coating type (powder/liquid), film build, and inspection lighting.

Acceptance risk if you skip the sample: hue/cleanliness differences from gloss/texture and process can cause rework. Exact matches to unknown coatings cannot be guaranteed without a physical control or OEM reference.

Deep blues like RAL 5002 can shift in appearance under different light sources (metamerism). A batch matched to the RAL standard under daylight conditions may look warmer or cooler under LED, fluorescent, or sodium lighting.

To reduce acceptance risk:

• Define inspection lighting on the PO (e.g., daylight D65/45 degrees, and the actual in-service lighting such as 4000K LED).
• Evaluate a control panel and production panel side-by-side under both the specified inspection light and the actual field lighting.
• If parts span multiple environments (factory floor vs. outdoors), check in each environment before release.
• For cross-material builds (powder + liquid), verify both under the same lighting set.

Without a lighting specification, a color that passes in the lab may be rejected in the field for hue differences. Request a sample panel in RAL 5002 for on-site verification when appearance is critical.

Primer needs depend on the substrate and whether bare material is exposed. RAL 5002 is the color target; adhesion and corrosion control come from proper surface prep and primer selection.

• Previously powder-coated parts: For small chips, feather sand, clean, and spot-prime only where bare metal is exposed (use a corrosion-inhibitive primer). For larger areas or unknown coatings, scuff-sand and use an adhesion-promoting or epoxy primer.
• Carbon steel: Remove rust/scale; use a zinc-rich or epoxy primer for corrosion resistance.
• Aluminum: Clean/deoxidize; use an epoxy or self-etch (chromate-free) primer for adhesion.
• Galvanized steel: Degrease, lightly abrade if possible; use a galvanized/wash primer designed for zinc surfaces.
• Plastics (ABS, PVC, polycarbonate): Clean; apply a plastic adhesion promoter before color.
• Concrete/masonry: Dry, clean surface; use a masonry sealer/primer to control porosity.

General steps: clean thoroughly, abrade to a uniform profile, remove dust, prime as above, then apply RAL 5002. Always test adhesion on a small area when coating over unknown or aged finishes.
