RAL 2004 Pure Orange Paint

RAL codes define a color target, not a coating process. Use this decision guide to avoid acceptance issues with RAL 2004 Pure Orange:

• Use standard RAL 2004 when: the drawing/PO specifies RAL 2004 (RAL Classic) without an OEM coating ID; parts span different materials where textures and sheens already differ; the work is low-criticality (small chips, functional protection); acceptance is to the RAL standard rather than to an existing part.
• Request a sample- or OEM-based match when: the part will be inspected side-by-side against existing coated parts; the surface is large or high-visibility; acceptance is strict; a specific OEM/powder code exists; or the existing part has aged/faded and you must match it as-is.
• Risk to manage: a to-standard RAL 2004 may not visually match an unknown or textured powder coat under your lighting. Define acceptance in writing (to RAL standard vs to the existing part) and specify gloss/texture requirements.
• If matching an existing coating, provide the OEM powder manufacturer/code and target gloss (60 degrees), or send a representative part/panel for match and approval.

Bright oranges have lower hiding power. Plan quantity for RAL 2004 with these guidelines:

• Liquid paint (spray/brush/roll): approx. 300-400 sq ft per gallon per coat on smooth, nonporous surfaces at typical film builds. Vibrant orange usually needs 2-3 coats over a white or light gray primer; more if covering dark colors without primer.
• Aerosol: approx. 20 sq ft per can per coat, depending on technique and part geometry; expect multiple coats for full hide.
• Variables that reduce coverage: dark substrates, porous/rough surfaces, higher specified DFT, complex geometry, and application losses.
• Planning tip: Gallons ~ (Area × Coats) ÷ Coverage per coat. Add 10-20% contingency for waste and touch-ups. Verify hide on a small test panel before committing production quantities.

RAL 2004 defines color only. Sheen and texture vary by coating chemistry (powder vs liquid) and are a common cause of rejection, especially with high-chroma oranges where gloss differences are obvious.

• Before ordering: identify the target finish. If possible, measure or obtain the 60 degrees gloss range from the existing part or OEM spec, or at minimum specify matte, satin, or gloss.
• For textured or matte powders: liquid touch-up will match color but cannot replicate texture. Decide whether acceptance is color only or requires a finish match, and document it on the PO.
• Control inspection variables: define lighting and viewing distance for acceptance. Lighting shifts can make the same RAL 2004 appear different.
• High-visibility areas: request a sample panel or submit a part for a color-and-sheen match and approval before production.
