A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 20059 reads as a very dark brown with a warm red-orange undertone and low chroma. It is close to black in depth, but the color remains distinctly brown rather than neutral black.

MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint in this government color reference is suited to specification-driven work where the target is the standard code itself. It can be used for touch-up on fabricated panels, electrical enclosures, brackets, housings, machine guards, cabinets, racks, hardware, and prototype parts that need to align with the selected Fed Std 595C reference.

Because this is a very dark color, substrate prep, primer choice, and film build can affect the final appearance. Surface texture, edge buildup, and sheen differences may be noticeable, and repairs beside older paint can read differently even when the color match is correct.

For acceptance-sensitive or adjacency-sensitive work, compare the applied coating against the existing part or project-approved finish rather than relying on the code alone. A Fed Std 595C reference defines the color target, but it does not account for aging, wear, gloss, or the coating system already on the item.

About US Government Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 Colors. Fed-Std-595C / FED STD 595 Colors

The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.

We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]

The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.

The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
    1 = gloss
    2 = semi gloss
    3 = matt

The second digit indicates the color group;
      0 = Brown     5 = Blue
      1 = Red         6 = Grey
      2 = Orange   7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
      3 = Yellow     8 = Fluorescent
      4 = Green

The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.

While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.

Frequently Asked Questions About Match of US Government™ Fed Std 595C 20059 *

Does Fed Std 595C 20059 define the whole coating system, or only the color target?

Fed Std 595C 20059 defines the color reference target, not the full coating system. It does not by itself choose the chemistry, gloss, surface preparation, corrosion protection, or application method for your project.

If your procurement package or maintenance instruction specifies more than the color code, match the product type and coating system to that requirement separately.

Will Fed Std 595C 20059 match an older in-service finish for touch-up?

Not always. Even if the code is correct, an older part can look different because of weathering, fading, sheen shift, texture, film build, or differences in the original coating system.

For a repair next to an aged finish, a standard color match may still show a difference. If the visible area is critical, a full-part repaint or a match to the existing part can be the better choice.

What product formats are available for Fed Std 595C 20059?

MyPerfectColor can supply paint matched to Fed Std 595C 20059 in formats such as spray paint, touch-up paint, paint pens, and brush-in-cap bottles where appropriate for the project.

Choose the format based on how the part will be applied, repaired, or covered. The color code is the reference target, while the product format should fit the job, substrate, and access to the surface.

If my drawing calls for Fed Std 595C 20059, is a standard color match enough for acceptance?

Not necessarily. A code match is useful, but some projects require a sample panel, an existing-part match, or a project-specific approval process before the work is accepted.

If the package is inspection-critical or the engineering authority has a defined approval path, confirm whether the standard color reference alone is acceptable before you order.

Can Fed Std 595C 20059 be used to choose the right paint for exterior or high-wear service?

The color code does not determine whether the coating is suitable for exterior exposure, abrasion, chemicals, or a specific substrate. Those requirements depend on the paint chemistry and coating system, not the color reference.

If the part will see harsh service, choose a product intended for that environment and make sure the application method matches the surface and duty requirements.
