A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 30318 reads as a muted warm gray-brown with an earthy yellow-brown undertone. It is mid-light in appearance and fairly low in chroma, so the color tends to look subdued rather than crisp or vivid.
MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint in this color can be used on brackets, panels, housings, enclosures, switch covers, support hardware, rack parts, and fabricated metal or plastic components when a government color reference needs to be repeated across repaired or new parts. It is also useful for carts, cabinets, vents, grilles, and prototype or training pieces that need to follow the same Fed Std 595C target.
Because the color is not highly saturated, it often covers more evenly than a brighter shade, but surface texture, substrate color, and film build can still change how warm or gray it appears after application. On rough, porous, or uneven surfaces, the undertone may read slightly differently, and gloss variation can make touch-up areas more noticeable even when the color match itself is correct.
For new parts and specification-driven work, matching the standard reference is usually the right target. If you are repairing next to an older coating that has faded, worn, or changed sheen, a direct standard match may not visually disappear next to the existing finish, so a sample panel or project-specific approval can be worth considering.

The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 30318 is a color reference target, not a complete coating specification. When you order MyPerfectColor paint, you are ordering a custom-matched paint made to match US Government Fed Std 595C 30318, but the code itself does not choose the chemistry, gloss, surface prep, or approval status for the job.
If your project also calls for a specific primer, finish level, corrosion system, or acceptance process, those requirements need to be handled separately from the color match.
Not always. A coating already on the part may have faded, weathered, changed sheen, or built texture over time, so a correct match to US Government Fed Std 595C 30318 can still look different beside the existing finish.
For touch-up work on visible surfaces, compare against the actual part whenever possible. If the existing coating is aged or the match is acceptance-critical, a full-part repaint or a match to the in-service finish may be a better choice than matching the standard code alone.
Start by cleaning the surface and removing dirt, oil, wax, and other contaminants. For bare metal, use the right corrosion control and primer for the substrate before applying the color coat. For an existing coating, scuff the surface and confirm that the old finish is sound and compatible.
Because mixed substrates and unknown prior coatings can behave differently, test the product on the actual part before doing a larger application of MyPerfectColor paint matched to US Government Fed Std 595C 30318.
Reorder by the exact color code, the same product type, and the same finish whenever possible. That gives you the best chance of keeping US Government Fed Std 595C 30318 consistent across multiple parts or later repairs.
Even with the same code, substrate, primer, application method, and film build can change how the finish reads after application. MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint made to match US Government Fed Std 595C 30318 is the right starting point, but process consistency still matters for the final appearance.
Dry-to-touch, recoat time, and full cure are different stages, and the correct timing depends on the specific MyPerfectColor product format you ordered. Use the instructions for that product rather than assuming the color code itself sets the schedule.
If coats are applied too soon, the finish can wrinkle, trap solvent, or lose performance. Plan the job around the label directions for the selected format, whether you are using spray paint, touch-up paint, or another matching product for US Government Fed Std 595C 30318.
