A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 23640 reads as a bright, warm yellow with a noticeable orange-gold cast. It is fairly light in value but still looks saturated rather than pastel, so the color comes across as clear and signal-like instead of muted.
For government-standard work, MyPerfectColor custom spray paint in this color is well suited to panels, brackets, housings, equipment covers, cart frames, switch covers, tool trays, and other fabricated parts that need a repeatable yellow reference. It can also be used for touch-up on small utility pieces such as railings, vent covers, or identification hardware when the specification calls for this exact code.
Because it is a vivid yellow, coverage can be less forgiving over dark, red, or uneven substrates, and the number of coats needed may increase depending on primer and film build. Sheen and surface texture can also change how orange the color reads, especially on smooth metal versus textured plastic or composite.
If you are matching an existing in-service part, keep in mind that a correct match to the standard chip may still differ from a faded or weathered coating on the original item. For acceptance-critical work, a sample panel or match to the actual part finish may be more appropriate than relying on the code alone.

The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 23640 is a government color reference target. It tells you which color to order, but it does not by itself define the coating chemistry, gloss level, surface preparation, corrosion protection system, or any formal approval status.
For project work, that means MyPerfectColor paint matched to AMS-STD-595 23640 can be the right choice when the specification calls for the color reference itself. If your job is compliance-sensitive, verify the full coating system and acceptance requirements separately.
It can be close to the standard reference, but an older coating may not look the same as the code because of fade, weathering, sheen change, texture, contamination, or a different original paint system.
If you are repairing a visible area beside aged paint, the better choice may be a match to the existing part or a full-part repaint instead of relying on the standard code alone. That reduces the risk that the repaired spot stands out.
Reorder by the exact code, then keep the product type and finish consistent across all parts. MyPerfectColor can make a match of AMS-STD-595 23640, but the final appearance can still change with substrate, surface prep, spray technique, and film build.
For best consistency, use the same color reference, the same product format, and the same finish across every part in the job. If the project already has an existing coating, compare your order to that condition before starting full production.
MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint for AMS-STD-595 23640 is available in spray paint and other formats for specification-driven color work, depending on the product line and application need.
Common options can include touch-up paint, paint pens, brush-in-cap bottles, epoxy, urethane, and housepaint where available. The color code is the reference target, not the product format, so choose the format that fits the part, the repair size, and the application method.
Finish changes how the color reads. A match of AMS-STD-595 23640 can appear different in matte, satin, or gloss because sheen, texture, and film build all affect perceived color.
If your project has a specified finish, match that finish as part of the order. If you are repairing an existing part, the surrounding sheen is often just as important as the color code itself.
